I'm all for wardrobe rules. I have a very long unwritten list of rules that I shop and dress by - No shoes with ankle straps, No trousers, Always a cinched waist but never a drop waist and Coco's words of wisdom are ever present, too. One of my favourites is "When accessorizing always take off the last thing you put on". And that's only the beginning of the list.

However, I tend to go against classic colour combination faux pas. I'm fully aware that red and green should never be seen but some crazy people (my GBF included) think that black and navy are a No-No. How could I possibly live without them? They are my go-to combination! I feel pretty safe wearing black, grey and blue but adding in brown isn't so easy. I wanted to balance out the brown in the necklace and in the elbow patches of this sweater, they are under there I promise. I was a bit unsure but I always admire Amy's use of grey tights with brown loafers so referred back to my favourite colour combination from last summer.

So here I am, breaking all the rules. I have black, navy, grey and brown all in the same outfit and -Shock-Horror!!- I think it looks alright. Else I wouldn't have worn it.
What do you think? What colours do you love to wear or hate to mix?
P.S. If you love Gin as much as I do (Mine is always a Gin & Slim with lime... never lemon) you can buy this beautifully handcrafted necklace from Stolen Thunder with a 15% discount from March 14th until April 13th with using the code 'PASSION'.

love the skirt, very cute outfit! :)

I try not to follow rules too much, it stops being fun if you worry too much about it. That said, I look awful in high necks and blue makes my skin look terrible! Love the necklace, who doesn't love a hearty G&T of an evening x
ReplyDeleteGreat outfit and love how you've "broken" the rules, which after all thats what they're there for!! I never really worry about my colour combinations but I always like to look slightly coordinated! So glad you like my love of loafers and grey tights, there such a good combo and glad to see you do to! Such a stunning outfit like always. I would love to see the jumper's elbow pads, maybe when it warms up a little! x
ReplyDeleteLove your Coat & Bag!! I Never used to wear Black & Navy but love it now!! Those rules are crap!! xx
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful outfit! Really like your hat!
ReplyDeleteummm my hate/rule was black with any kind of blue (except jeans that is) but not only do you make it work but it looks great!
ReplyDeleteI also liked some turquoise tights-black shoes combination I saw this winter but I am still a bit hesitant to try that..
anyways, these days I'm all about mixing grays-blues-white/creams-browns. pretty safe I know but I'm loving it!
ps: your blog is one of my all time favorites! I've been following for quite a while but never commented up till now :D
You look lovely. Navy and black are fine together, and they look lovely with your grey tights and brown shoes. My 'rule' is I hate black leather jackets worn with brown leather bags, I don't like mixing leather colors, (unless its shoes and bag) but leather shorts/jackets/knee high boots/etc must be worn in the sameish colour with matching bag...bit pedantic perhaps!?x
ReplyDeletei think it's a great combination of colours, and black goes with everything! what are they saying about no black and navy!
ReplyDeletelovely outfit.

Such a lovely outfit! I absolutely love that colour combination, you've pulled it off really well and it doesn't look mix and matchy like some people's outfits can do. Everything goes so perfectly well!

Adorable outfit! I love this coat, and I think your colour combo works so well! xx
ReplyDeleteI really like the blue and black together, the skirt is really perfect.
ReplyDeletewhen i was in school for apparel design my final collection consisted of a lot of navy and black. to my horror during critique one of my professors told me that she was concerned about my use of the two and basically threatened to dock points for using navy and black together. well, i didn't change anything and the following week the new issue of Lucky magazine came in the mail and they ran a feature on navy and black being a great combination. i promptly ripped it out and left it on her desk haha. i ended up getting an A hahaha.
ReplyDeletereally darling outfit, i love that necklace! my favorite gin is hendrick's, mmmmm.
I think you look lovely, and I especially love the brown touch :) Not to mention the grey tights, my latest crush!
ReplyDeleteAle
I think it looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteYep, it looks ace. I think you can always add another neutral, so long as you add more than one piece. Which is what you're doing with the necklace (and the supposed elbow patches), so great!
ReplyDeleteAdore this look. I hope you start selling your beautiful designs. I love that skirt.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your rules. But I do love trousers! I also love G&T's and always with a lime!
I love to wear brown, blues with white, and grey with black... I hate to mix many colours.
ReplyDeleteLovely blog I must day, I am now following you *
I think you're blog is great. Totally jealous that you can pull off those great outfits. I'm alway striving to add more skirts and dresses into my work wardrobe. But I can't leave my trousers behind. :) And I love my G&T's on a summer night!
ReplyDeleteIf there's one color I don't know how to wear, it's navy. I try, but I always feel off when I wear it. So, I most definitely am not brave enough to pair it with black. Aside from that personal taboo, I avoid wear multiple shades of the same color. I'll never wear multiple shades of brown at once, for example. Also: I avoid wearing gold and silver at the same time. Wow, I guess I have lots of rules!
ReplyDeleteSo classy, love it. :)
ReplyDeleteI really like that outfit, it goes well together!
ReplyDeleteI do have rules but everything in my wardrobe goes with each other, so I'm quite lucky...!

There are some things I don't like much like blue and black together but there are always exceptions and I think most things have to be tried out. If it's the right tone together everything looks fine. My favourites are red with black white striped and black and white with gold or red black and gold and of course blue white and red... you know, there are so many things I like in my closet.
ReplyDeleteThe rules are made to be broken.
ReplyDeleteHaving said that, I'd never wear tights or socks with open-toed shoes. I don't like how that looks.
You look lovely here. I vote we ignore all the colour rules.
I love this post, I wrote a post about this very subject for very - http://blog.very.co.uk/2010/07/my-very-own-style-rules/
ReplyDeleteI'd love to know more about your rules!
That necklace is hilarious, I'm getting it shipped to the US.
ReplyDeleteI think the outfit looks pretty good, I would only change the bag for a black one. I love combinating colors and haven't really got many rules when dressing, I only don't wear things that look unflattering on me and yes ok I am quite obsessed about matching color shoes and handbag haha
ReplyDeleteBlack and navy blue don't look bad, you just have to know how to coordinate them. And green and red is a beautiful combination why not?! It makes me think about a tree with red apples and I love the feeling :)
I'm never sure about gray and brown together (I'm OK with navy and black--I read the same article as m.bardeaux), but you've put my worries to rest. I think I can confidently go about mixing gray and brown now!
ReplyDeleteI'm a gin gal, too: G&Ts, gimlets, white ladies, gin and soda, martinis. Yum.
your so lovely ^^
ReplyDeletefollowing!
xxx kissmequick
I try not to think too much about all those rules. If it looks great, I'll wear it :)
ReplyDeleteAnd this is a very good looking, perfect matching outfit!

I lvoe black and navy together, and I ma a sucker for black *and* brown, to hell with the rules! My grandmother and my mother stick to the rule that you should never wear more than two colours at any one time which I think is crazy!
ReplyDeleteThere's always a loophole and this is clearly quite a fab loophole!
ReplyDeleteaaa I've got the same shoes as you !! they're from primark, why going to somewhere els when primark to it so cheap and not so bad !!
ReplyDeleteThe color combination looks stunning on you! Black and navy are my go to colors too, I can't seem to get color into my wardrobe... so It's nice to see you pair that combination with brown!
ReplyDeleteThe "faux pas" of navy & black is my go-to fashion combination! I love it because it breaks up an otherwise all black combo, which can be a bit harsh in sunny ol' Brisbane, where I'm from. That being said, I'm weird about mixing metals - silver, gold and bronze etc. If I'm wearing silver jewellery, it's all got to be silver... even down to the hardware on my bag. It's a bit of an obsession, unfortunately...
ReplyDeleteSuch a cute necklace and beautiful bag too!
ReplyDeleteSuch lovely photo's! you look stunning x
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love this outfit! so sweet and looks great on you! xoxo
ReplyDeleteyou are actually such an inspiration to me.. i hope you never stop doing what you are doing! :)
