Crumble

The days leading up to January's dalliance with February are bitterly cold and daylight is scarce. All in all it is a bleak affair and for me there is only one cure - Comfort food. Mac and cheese, steamed puddings and crumble. Apple, pear and ginger crumble. Preferably with a scoop of Mackies ice cream.

This weekend the stress of arranging renovations and moving house was all too much so I broke out my lovely new Le Creuset pan, a kind gift from Idealo and baked crumble.

4 large cox apples, peeled and cut in half
4 pears, peeled and cut in half
2 lumps of stem ginger in syrup, finely grated
75g light brown sugar50ml Apple juice
100g spelt flour
100g plain flour
115g unsalted butter, chilled, cut into pieces
100g demerara sugar

Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4.Place the apples, pears, ginger, light brown sugar and apple juice in a pan and heat gently for 5 minutes. Cook until the fruit is tender.

In a bowl, mix together the two types of flour and rub in the butter with your finger tips, once it resembles breadcrumbs stir in demerara sugar to make the topping.

Put the apples and pears into a baking dish (in this case I left them in the pan) and scatter over the crumble topping mixture. Sprinkle over a little extra sugar for added crunch and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is crumbly and golden.

It is often the case that the most sought after treasures are found in unexpected places. Last week I was browsing in Primark for some sensible, renovation-appropriate attire when I saw a white lace sleeve poking out from behind a mass of asymmetric dresses. When I finally unearthed it from a tangle of hangers and held it up to the light I found that it was perfect in every way. Very simple cotton lace with buttons running up the centre of the back. The only downside was the size - three sizes bigger than I wear but I added it to my pile none the less. When I finally made it to the changing room with slightly aching arms, I was very pleased to find that despite the size tag it was a very nice fit. Just a little over-sized but all the better for it. I practically ran to the till.

I was pretty sure that my luck had hit a peak for the day so off home home I went, walking through the New Town and past all the antique shops, which is where my second discover of the day was to be found. Nestled in a window of a wee shop just by the Botanic Gardens, amongst tea sets and antique sewing books was the smallest leather suitcase I have ever seen. I nearly didn't but I knew I to make it mine or I would always regret it. I bought it with the intention of storing bits and pieces but with the help of a borrowed strap I think it makes a nice little bag. Albeit a rather unpractical one, just enough room for life's essentials - rose lip balm, a little card envelope, my phone and reading material in the form of Company Magazine. Their new size magazine fits with not a millimetre to spare which might just be fate because... Just as I was leaving the antique shop, with my new suitcase wrapped in tissue paper I received an email for none other than Company Magazine informing me that Wayward Daughter has been nominated for two Company Style Blogger Awards.

Best 'We Love Vintage' Blog and Best Blog for Highstreet Lovers as well as in the over all category. Wayward Daughter for Audrey Grace Boutique

Some may have wondered why everything suddenly went quiet on the Wayward Daughter (the frocks, not the blog) front, I've even received a couple of emails asking if I'll restock the shop anytime soon. The answer is yes, I will and the reason everything has gone silent is because I've been so busy. If you follow me on Facebook or Twitter you might have seen a few quick shots of these dresses but if not, these were part of a collection that I designed especially for Audrey Grace Boutique in Jackson, Mississippi. Jaclyn, the owner of the store asked me to create a number of bespoke pieces for the boutique but these four are my favourites.

They are made in Liberty Tana Lawn and the beautiful illustrations were part of a lookbook that Jaclyn commissioned Caitlin Shearer to put together. Caitlin just so happens to be one of my favourite artists so it was an extreme pleasure to see her take on my work. In all she worked on almost twenty illustrations of Wayward Daughter, each one completely capturing the aesthetic while only working with my (extremely basic) digital sketches. The girl is a genius!

For now I'm working on a few new pieces for the shop,one of which you can see on WD's Facebook page. I have have spent most of Christmas happily occupied in the kitchen, baking a mountain of cake and making Christmas dinner for my family. The Big Knit with Innocent

All month I've been enjoying seeing the hats that bloggers have designed for The Big Knit with Innocent. You can read all about it on the Innocent Facebook page and enter the competition but in essence, Innocent are making a donation to Age UK for every smoothie sold with a wee woolly hat. It would take a cold heart not to melt at the thought of mini woolly hats on smoothies, helping to keep older people warm this winter.

The thing is, once you have enjoyed your smoothie and attempted to balance the little hat on your none too impressed cat what is to become of it? The answer is simple, Egg Cosies! They help keep the eggs warm while you scurry around buttering soldiers and making tea. Though, if you still want a lovely soft yolk, cut the boiling time by 30 seconds because they keep cooking under their cosy. Don't they make Mr Badger look dashing!

A Sunday in November

It's that time of year again, when taking outfit pictures becomes a battle against the elements and the swiftly waning light. I tried my best last winter and mostly succeeded but as you may have noticed, things have been slow around here as it is. Truth be told I've been struggling to find a balance between sewing, blogging and everything else in between.

I love my blog and I suppose you could say that getting dressed is a favoured hobby of mine but I never really set out to write a style blog. The blogs that I have admired from the beginning and really immerse myself in are actually more like an online dairy that anything else - a bit of everything, whatever is going on in the writers life. I find it so interesting to see a little glimpse into how these girls live and dress in foreign cities and to follow a little part of their life.

In the past I've been hesitant to blog about things that aren't frocks or shoes, I suppose this is partly though bad experiences that I've had and if I'm totally honest its easy to stick with what you know. With all of this in mind, I've decided to try and change things up a little around here. That doesn't mean that outfit posts are going to outlawed, not at all. I would hate that! Just that I'm going to make room for other things as well.

This is how Adam and I spent our Sunday, wandering around town drinking coffee and settling into the festive spirit. We stopped by The Red Door Gallery on Victoria Street to see the lovely window display packed full of A Wooden Tree's creations. Then onto one of Edinburgh's (we have two) year round Christmas shops to pick out some tree decorations. I found it so hard to choose between Young Victoria, Sherlock Holmes and Henry VIII plus all his wives so in the end I left them behind and bought HMS Victory instead. Then home for homemade pizza with Venison pepperoni, which I did try to capture but my low light photography still needs some work.

Sunday Best: Velvet and Plaid

There are many stylish ladies that I look to when I am in need of a little inspiration. I often mention the most obvious contenders - Bloggers, 60's models, Edwardian daughters and of course a certain television presenter/muse/model. Only up until now I have failed to mention the ladies who constantly inspire my winter wardrobe - The Scottish Granny. These wee old ladies are always neat as a pin, whether they are shopping in Jenners or walking their Westie in Victoria Park. Always sporting tartan, velvet or tweed expertly pulled together with a lone gilt brooch or a genuine Tam O'Shanter hat.

I admire their stubborn resistance to change, unlike so many generations. Staying true to their style despite constantly moving fashions. Adam is forever pronouncing my outfit Like a Nana's, while some might be offended by this I can only grin and correct him - like a Granny, not a Nana. So, when I was tapped on the shoulder in the baking aisle of Hobbie Craft by none other than A Scottish Granny and asked where she might find a coat like mine I was more than a little pleased with myself. Only I had some trouble explaining that originally it came from Topshop but I bought it on ebay (both were met with a puzzled expression) after missing out in my size the first time and searching for it ever since. When I told her that I finally found it for under £20, she seized my arms and exclaimed "Oh Hen, what a bargain. Good lass!" and bid me a good afternoon. Leaving me feeling like the cat who got the cream.

These pictures were taken weeks after that conversation but this is essentially the same outfit. I had some trouble keeping my hat on and my hair from whipping around my face in wind but it was worth it to take in the view and giggle at where this sleepy cat choose for her bed.

Uniqlo Sweater - c/o Voucher Codes Most Wanted

Last month Wayward Daughter was lucky enough to be named one of the Best Up-and-Coming UK Fashion Blogs in Voucher Codes Most Wanted Fashion 100. Instead of solely showcasing the big gun bloggers, the list also focuses on fresh talent. It is so refreshing to see new names up there and so many great blogs put in the spotlight. It is also such a pleasure to be included alongside some of my favourite UK blogs - Louder than Silence, Foxtail and Fern and Mademoiselle Robot, to name but three.

Through the Fashion 100, Most Wanted asked me to take part in their high street cashmere challenge. According to fashion magazines everywhere, cashmere, angora and wool are so this season.I try not to take much notice of what they say but after last years arctic winter I confess, I have been stockpiling knitwear. The onlyproblem is sumptuous knits like angora and cashmere aren't very well behaved, they are prone to shrink, stretch or bobble and to top it all off they are expensive. With all of this in mind, I thought the cashmere challenge would be a great resource and agreed to take part. Myself and a selection of bloggers were assigned a different high street shop and asked to put a 100% cashmere sweater through its paces. My sweater was from Uniqlo, which is £79.90 and comes in a rainbow of colours - naturally I shunned these and choose boring old grey.

Size and Fit: I'm not familiar with Uniqlo's sizing but Adam has a collection of their chambray shirts in size S which I can comfortably wear. I wanted a loose fitting jumper to wear over dresses so based on the shirts and their sizing guide I choose a size M. For the look I wanted I would have been better to buy a L or even an XL because this sweater fits very snugly. It is also very long which doesn't at all fit in with personal style but because it is so tight it can be easily tucked under and disguised as a cropped sweater without constantly unfurling itself.

Texture and Care: Given that the sweater is 100% cashmere it is extremely soft and not prone to excess bobbling, well not so far. It is also warm enough to wear indoors but not so heavy as to be too hot under a wool coat. As you can see the care label is very clear - dry clean only. I have lots of dry clean only pieces but these are mostly dresses not everyday items like a simple grey sweater. For me this is a downside because I would prefer to to make trips (or pay for them) for something so ordinary.

Lessons in concealment with Cover F X

When it comes to make up, I'm certainly no authority. For years my makeup routine has been shamefully basic. A dab or two of concealer, a flick of black eyeliner, black mascara, and a quick dust of blusher. Once the sun goes down I might amplify the eyeliner, go heavy on the Ruby Woo and if I'm feeling really brave I'll wrestle with false eyelashes but it's all just variations on a theme.

When it comes to applying make up with any finesse, my skills begin and end with the application of liquid eyeliner. That I can do in ten second flat, on a bus trundling down a cobbled street with a mirror the size of a postage stamp but that's it. It's only in the last few months that I have even ventured so far as to wear foundation and even then its only light coverage and not everyday. This is because my skin is sensitive to the point of hysteria coupled with a tricky skin tone. A mix of Scottish and Hawaiian parentage bestowed upon me a complexion that tans easily in Summer with a liberal scattering of freckles but in the depths Winter is sallow yet pink cheeked. If I have ever found a colour match, the chances are that it will irritate my skin so when Cover FX invited me to their new counter at Edinburgh's Harvey Nichols for a colour match, I though they would have their work cut out.

I am pleased to say that I couldn't have been further from the truth. I had the pleasure of meeting Lee Graff, President and Co-Creator of Cover FX and Wanda Longo, International Communications Director who taught me more about Cover FX and its origins. You can read more about it here but in short the range has been specifically created to provide natural coverage for those suffering from skin conditions such as acne or even facial scars. This means Cover FX boast over 30 different shades of foundation, which are all paraben, fragrance and oil free. Meaning they cater for all manner of skin tones and are perfect for sensitive skin.

I have to admit, when I'm shopping for a new product it is only with extreme reservation that I sit down in a make up artists chair, especially if the one wielding the brushes is deep shade of terracotta. I need not have worried, Victor was charming and fresh faced. In fact, his skin was so flawless that I wondered if he was wearing any make up at all. When I asked him, he assured me that it was all Cover FX and that was simply the beauty of the brand.

While I sat there, brushes flying, talked me through all the steps - primer, powder, foundation, concealer, a little more powder finished off with the most perfect shade of lip gloss some bronzer. Again, I have to admit that I was still thinking what a lot of make up but once again I was wrong. When I saw the finished article I was quite literally amazed, first of all the colour matched so perfectly and how is it possible to wear what, to me is a lot of make up and look so fresh faced.

I took these pictures the same afternoon (aside from adjusting the white balance they remain unedited) and after seeing the result on screen I still couldn't believe it. I was sure that in my hands, instead of those of a professionals it would not look nearly a good. Wrong again, I've used it every day since and I am a complete convert. However, I have learned one important lesson- Foundation is best applied with a brush. Not a cheap sponge or - Quelle Horreur, my finger tips as I had done previously. While I would fully recommend all of their products, for me the reigning champion is the Clearprep FX primer, after wearing it for two days any blemished I had disappeared and my skin has stayed clear ever since.

Sunday Best: Monki Review

Ever since I discovered the blogging world I have been in awe of Scandinavian culture and their effortless style. One name that continually appeared on my favourite Scandi blogs was Monki, and for the past few years I have been visiting their site to pine after the simplistic frocks and quirky accessories. This continued until I watched Laetitia of Melle Robot's series on Monki Television when a full blown obsession arose. It intensified after watching all of Indigo Clarke's (Swoon!) episodes and right now I am completely besotted with seeing my favourite Swedish blogger Elsa Billgren, take over Monki Television. Anyway... when I finally heard the news that Monki had commenced shipping to the UK I had to get my hands on this pie frill frock and put in an order that very morning. Before I made the order I had a few questions about sizing etc. When I posted on Twitter about my order a few people asked about it so I decided to do a review as well as my standard here-I-am-wearing-a-frock post.

The little pie frill collar was the reason I choose this dress but because it is a little big on me, the high neck and full sleeves were overpowering on my busty frame. Instead of returning it, I ironed the collar down and rolled up the sleeves which seemed to balance it out a little.

Size and Quality:After scrutinising the size guide and ignoring all advice I decided to buy a size too big which was a complete mistake and entirely my own fault. I worked on the premise that because Monki is owned by Hennes and Mauritz the sizing would be comparable to H&M (I used to work for them so I know their sizing well), which is always on the small side. However I was completely wrong and my advice would be to trust the size guide because the sizes are generous. In terms of quality I would say this dress is comparable to H&M, well finished in 100% cotton but as the fabric is light pink it is a little see through but not enough to need an underskirt.

Shipping:On the Monki site it states that delivery will take 3-5 days after the parcel has left their warehouse which they estimate will be one working day after the order has been placed. They were true to their word, I ordered on a Monday, the order was dispatched on Tuesday and it arrived with me on Friday afternoon.

Just as soon as I can whittle my order down from everything in the whole store I'll be putting in another order, in the correct size this time! If I have missed anything out, feel free to ask and I'll try my best to answer.

Edinburgh Guide: Out of the Blue Flea Market

Rummaging around in search of tatty old treasures just might be my favourite pastime. You just never know what you are going to find! So when the organisers of the flea market at Out of the Blue asked if I would come along and take a few pictures of my visit and I was delighted to accept. The pictures were taken back in the Summer, on a rain soaked Saturday morning but the flea market runs once a month including this Saturday.Edinburgh has car boot sales, antique fairs but until now we have been missing a middle ground. The flea market at Out of the Blue totally bridges this gap. All the stalls sell reasonably priced vintage, unlike many of the antique fairs where prices for similar items are often double. Yet it is a far cry from the car boot sale, which is housed in a dingy multi story car park. Don't get me wrong, I relish a trip to either but it makes a refreshing change to find so many great stalls all together in one place in such lovely surroundings. The icing on the cake has to be their wonderful cafe which, for me anyway, is an extra incentive to haul myself out of bed on a Saturday morning.

While I was there, I picked up a couple of coronation cups to add to my collation and this green medicine tin. If you fancy popping along to Out of The Blue to unearth some vintage treasures, it will be on from 10am - 3pm tomorrow - Saturday 15th at The Drill Hall on Dalmeny Street, just off Leith Walk.

Has it really been two whole weeks since I blogged last? Ouch! I've missed it terribly but I've just been so busy making Wayward Daughter frocks that I haven't had any spare time. Amongst other things I've been working on a few bespoke frocks for Audrey Grace Boutique, which have also been illustrated by Caitlin Shearer. I'm a huge fan of her work so I cannot even express how elating it is to see her take on my designs.

In a fickle turn of events Mother Nature sent an Indian Summer to the UK. If you follow me on Twitter you will have heard cries of my distress at this sudden transformation. Long story short, I adore October and did not want to forgo my woollens. Thankfully (for me) Autumn has returned to Scotland once more, rain and all. When I awoke to a damp and misty morning, I quite gleefully rummaged around in my wardrobe for a woolly jumper. In bleak February when winter has dug its stubborn heels in, I will without doubt look ruefully upon this post. Hopelessly daydreaming of an Indian Summer but for now I am very happy to have October.

My colour of choice at the moment is a Mushroomy grey, just like this jumper. It was an impulse buy from H&M, after actively avoiding shopping there for the past few years all of a sudden my whole wardrobe seems to be stocked full of their basics. Since I've been spending all my time drafting and sewing, it calls for practical, comfortable outfits. This one has been a staple over the past couple of weeks, with sewing machine friendly loafers, or desert boots if I'm lucky enough to leave the house but always accessoried with this heart necklace which was a gift from Far Fetch. We stole a few pictures yesterday on my coffee break, when it promptly began to rain… that's October for you!

Exactly one year ago today, I posted this set. I've blogged many outfits over the past few years but this remains one of my favourites. After a long week of daily outfits I wasn't really in the mood for stepping in front of the camera again so instead, here are my favourites from the first time around plus a few that failed to make the original cut.

I'm busy putting the finishing touches to my winter collection for Wayward Daughter and this Sherlock/Fantastic Mr Fox inspired outfit has been constantly on my mind, which is really quite fitting as this post was where the whole idea began.

Style Challenge: Days Six & Seven

I don't follow trends as such but I'm all for the leather (I refuse to use the B-word for fear the type of reader it is likely beckon) trend that is everywhere this season. What I am not fond of is the harsh, brazen look that it seems to be associated with. I've already succumb and purchased a leather skirt but this top is the perfect place to start a flirtation with the look without full committal. I like to keep things uniform so I teamed with my leather skirt and toffee duffle to brave the stormy weather. Five seconds out the door and I looked a bedraggled mess!

Cocoon Coat - c/o M&S

I saved this outfit for the final day of the challenge because I needed to work myself up to it. I adore coats, they are my favourite item of clothing but inside my comfort zone coats do not exists in bold colours and they are almost always fitted. While I like the 60's style silhouette, I fully admit that I just did not know how to make this work for me.

Faced with this particular sartorial predicament I did what I always do, I turned to a fictional character for style advice. This time I asked myself what would Trudy Campbell do? In case you don't know Trudy Campbell is the wife of Pete Campbell in the 1960s based drama, Mad Men. She is young, newly married and has little to do aside from shop and have her hair set. She favours the latest fashions and is awful fond of a jolly hat. Anyway, what I think Trudy would do is this - Rock it with a matching frock, an up-do and a fancy headscarf. Since the matching frock was out unavailable and a headscarf out of the question, I put my hair up and resorted to what Cait Harrington would do - Keep it nice and simple. While I'm not sure that this coat will become a regular feature in my day to day wardrobe but it is fun to dress up a someone else once in a while.

Style Challenge: Day Five

Yesterday was a somber day, doing anything other than drink tea and watch the memorial coverage just didn't feel right. Clothes and styling seemed frivolous and if it weren't for my involvement in this challenge I wouldn't have even considered blogging. My thoughts are wholehearted with the many people who's lives were forever altered on September 11th 2001.

Needless to say wearing a styled outfit was not high on my agenda. I choose this jumper because it was easy to wear, bold enough to hold its own without needing any help. Just a black wool skirt, my favourite Beret (My Mum calls me Benjamin Bunny when I wear it) and a bottomless cup of Earl Grey.

Style Challenge: Day Four

The best pieces in and girls wardrobe are the versatile ones and this skirt is quickly becoming a staple in mine. Despite wearing it on day two of the challenge, I couldn't turn down the opportunity to style it again. Last time it was quite a smart look but for a spot of book shopping I wanted something a little more comfortable. The peachy colour is a bit of a wild card for me but it just felt right, somewhere in the back of my mind I thought of the colour palette from the Luella AW09 collection - The one inspired by Cornish witches. Right towards the end a Luella show pony, with gigantic crimped hair trots out wearing a peach party frock, navy cardigan and grey tights. I've always loved the colour combination but I've never been brave enough to try it out, that is until now. Incidentally the navy bowler is from M&S too but I bought it before I was even asked to take part in the challenge, I've been looking for a blue one for years so I snapped it up as soon as I saw it.

Only three days in and so much for the bold notion of stepping out of my comfort zone. I did think about wearing this dress as it was designed to be worn but I just couldn't do it. I'm all for silhouette hugging frocks but not so much for trawling fabric shops midweek (I actually wore this a few days ago because yesterday was Adams birthday and I knew I would be too busy to take photographs) so I tucked it into a simple black skirt to make it a little more friendly for the daylight hours. It was only afterwards that I noticed M&S made a very similar top so, as the saying goes - Great minds think alike!

Style Challenge: Day Two

Day two and I've taken a little step back inside my comfort zone with this tie dyed skirt, navy blazer and blouse. I adore the skirt, especially its big apron pockets. I found it so easy to dress up or down, during the day I wore it with patent loafers and a vest underneath the blouse and for a quick drink in the evening I swapped the flats for heels and braved the sheer blouse sans vest - Ooh la la! What do you think of the side pony? It began life as a pale imitation of this masterpiece but as the day went on it became a little dishevelled but I think I prefer the tousled (messy) version.

When Marks and Spencer asked me to take part in their week long style challenge I have to admit, I was a little unsure. Usually I avoid competitions at all costs and the thought of someone else choosing what I wear is my worst nightmare, which is exactly why I agreed to take part. I'm a creature of habit and it is high time that I was pushed out of my comfort zone. However, I would be telling a fib if I told you the thought of winning a trip to Paris and M&S vouchers to giveaway to a WD reader didn't nudge me toward taking part but the main reason was to broaden my sartorial horizons.

M&S sent me some key pieces from their Limited Edition collection and for the next week, alongside five other bloggers, I will be wearing an item everyday and blogging about it. M&S will be sharing our looks on their Facebook page and at the end of the challenge the blogger with the most votes (all you have to do is like on the one you like best) will be declared the winner.

Today was a day of firsts, the first day of the challenge and the first time I have ever worn trousers on this blog. If you don't count gym clothes or pyjamas (and I don't) I only own one pair of trousers - black high waist jeans and in the past year or so I have worn them a handful of times. It isn't that I have anything against them or even that I don't think they suit me, I simply prefer wearing skirts. Which is why it came as a very pleasant surprise how much I enjoyed wearing these chinos. Though they are nicely tailored they are still really comfortable. I was also surprised at how easily they were to style into my existing wardrobe. I choose to style it simply because today I was only working in my little studio but I could have just as easily worn it with heeled loafers, a blouse and neck tie like a bit of a dandy.

All summer long I've been meaning to make use of the bright evenings to capture a 'going out' outfit. I finally found an opportunity this weekend on our way out for a few drinks. Lace dresses, stupidly high heels, big hair and red lipstick are always high on my agenda when it comes to getting dolled up. Only this rosy dress, a gift from French Connection, called for something a little more subtle.

I found my much neglected leather jacket at the back of the wardrobe, a bit dusty, unloved and in dire need of an outing. The mossy nail polish was an impulse buy in the epic Models Own sale which I though married quite nicely with the dusky rose lace (its actually paler than in these pictures). I was able to forgo scarlet lips and backcombed hair but there was no way I could give up my heels! As for the spectacles, don't believe I have ever worn my glasses in an outfit post (or if I have it was a very long time ago). I don't wear them all the time, mostly just for sewing but after a busy week making frocks my eyes were tired and needed a helping hand.

Little by little autumn is creeping in ready to banish summer for another year. I love living in a country with such distinct seasons (well, maybe not in the case of summer) and watching them change around me
but the next few months are my favourite time of year. Blustery days filled with romantic expectations for the coming season without the dreary reality of the long harsh winter. Hopefully there will be a few more warm days before summer bids us adieu but this weekend has been distinctly chilly. Not that I am complaining, it has given my an opportunity to wear some of the autumnal pieces the I've been gathering.

Quite uncharacteristically I've been buying basic, especially these huge jumpers from H&M. The shape is so simple that they are easily thrown on over frock which is pretty handy for surviving the fickle temperatures of late summer in Scotland. I won't lie, they are pretty much a blanket with sleeves (see funny arms shot) and oh-so-cosy for it.

I'm not sure how the leather skirt came about but all of a sudden I needed one, my life/wardrobe just wouldn't be complete without it. Not exactly in keeping with the rest of my attire but it has settled in reasonably well. I think I'll fashion a Louis Vuitton style leather collar to wear it with next and a big grey jumper for a not-actually-going-back-to-school outfit.

Make Yourself at Home: Girl Cave

No Sunday Best this weekend, I'm afraid. Truth be told, I've spent my whole weekend in jeans (yes, jeans!) busy with an exciting project. Ever since I started on the road towards opening Wayward Daughter I've been working out of our little study, which is little more than a broom cupboard and was actually supposed to be Adam's Man Cave... a silly name drafted up on a gin fuelled evening with friends. Only since Wayward Daughter is already off to a flying start, I thought it was time to set up WD HQ... so to speak.

On Friday I recommissioned our sparsely used dining room, made a trip to Ikea and then spent the whole weekend priming and preening. Its not quite there yet but it already feels like home. Adam has already christened it my Girl Cave, which is really quite fitting. There are so many pastel colours, the room is practically oozing Estrogen.

My guilty pleasures thus far have to be sticking pretty pictures on the wall under the guise of inspiration and bulk buying stationary. This is the beginnings of my wall of Wayward Daughters - As you can see Z Berg, Annie Monroe, Megan Fox and Françoise Hardy have already made the cut.

Would you believe if I told you all of those note books came to £2.25? I nipped into Asda for a pint of milk and there they were, 25p for a pack of five!

Sunday Best: Duffle Cape

Every girl has a sartorial weakness, some hoard shoes, others cannot resist bags but my frailty will always be the winter coat. When I say winter coat, what I really mean is any outdoor garment that can be worn between September and April. Peacoat, Mackintosh, Princess Coat, Swing Coat, Car Coat, Cape, Found in a thrift store resembling a school blazer... I have one of each but what I do not own is a Duffle coat. I've always though them a little frumpy, that is until I found this little darling, just waiting for me in the clearance section on Asos with a rather nice discount. After quickly confirming with my GBF (He owns twice as many coats as me and is always goading me into buying more) that it was acceptable to commence coat buying in August. He informed me that he is already ahead by two purchases and I clicked 'buy now'.

When it arrived I hung it gleeful in my wardrobe with all my other hoarded woollens, ready to pull out when the leaves begin to fall. Only then Monsoon season hit Scotland and I discovered that it is actually the perfect raincoat. The big hood keeps me safe and dry but it is breezy enough under the cape to remain cool in the muggy weather. I'm entirely converted to the Duffle, intact I've already picked out my first winter coat - A toffee coloured Duffle with a back pleat to avoid all frumpiness!

If you follow me on Facebook or Twitter you might have already heard that at very long last I have realesed Wayward Daughter's debut mini collection, which can be found in the WD online shop. I won't inundate you with pictures of frocks and pretty collars, you can see all that in the shop, for now I would like to show you my second favourite part of setting up the label. My first was of course designing and making the clothes but I also loved working on the branding. While I work on all the blog's day to day graphics and photo editing myself, I'm very luck to have a graphic designer at my beck and call which is pretty handy as I just about know my way around Illustrator but I'm certainly no typographer.

Together Adam and I worked on branding ideas, early on we decided to continue with the same fonts from the blog - Bullion an original Wild West press font and Learning Curve a modern script. Adam reworked the 'WD' to mirror the original printing block and after many samples and much debate I decided to embark upon the labour intensive task of printing each tag by hand on 100% cotton paper, which thirstily soaks up the ink showing off the textured grain. I'm so glad that I decided to put in the extra time because they turned out exactly as I hoped they would.

All items are from a limited run of late summer pieces and sizes have already begun to sell out. Love at First Sight: Penny Lane

I've been swooning over Jeffery Campbell shoes ever since I started this blog but it wasn't until I was in San Francisco last year, I actually tried a pair on. I must have tried ten pairs, mostly Lita's but I couldn't find a love match so I returned home with a size 6.5 wooden heeled space in my heart resigned to pay extortionate shipping and taxes or just live without. That is until I discovered that Zalando stock a wealth of JC woodies, oxford and platforms. It is only a matter of time before Penny Lane and I will be strolling through fallen leaves together.

Sunday Best: Visiting the Museum

This weekend the Nation Museum of Scotland reopened after almost four years of refurbishment so naturally Adam and I paid a long awaited visit. I'm quite sure that I was not alone in exhaling a great sigh of relief upon seeing that the main hall remains relatively unchanged. Aside, of course from the sad departure of Scotland's most beloved fish. This revelation, I admit, was a little distressing but after strolling (elbowing) through the taxidermy rooms any upset was quickly forgotten. All manner of animals - lions, tigers and a polar bears are all housed together under an ocean of sea creatures aswell as a lone hippopotamus all suspended from the ceiling by wire. The inhabitants of Noah's Ark have been my favourite part of the museum ever since my first visit seventeen years ago when I was only eight so in celebration of their return I dressed for the occasion in a fox and deer print shirt dress.

Another of my favourite artifacts was a gigantic light from a decommissioned lighthouse. I visited the exhibition on Lighthouse Life on my birthday this year and became utterly enchanted by the seemly romantic, though probably lonely life of a life house keeper. I can already see this winter wardrobe containing roll neck sweaters, flat caps and a pipe! After a good nosey around all the exhibitions and a cup of tea we made for the roof terrace to admire the view. If you are in the city this summer, I would thoroughly recommend visiting, admission is completely free and the view from the terrace is only second to climbing Arthurs Seat which would involve, well... climbing.

Edinburgh Guide: The Glasshouse

A few weekends ago, The Glasshouse were so kind as to invite Adam and I to stay. On the day we arrived, Mother Nature chose to send a downpour of biblical proportions and we quite literally washed up in the foyer, Scottish summertime at its very best. Needless to say, when we arrived in our room to find a warming dram o' whiskey and a tray of freshly baked shortbread it was a much welcomed treat. After we had dried of a little and explored the bounteous suit, we moved to the bar to sit in front of the open fire and indulge in my country's best offerings.

Once warm, dry and a perhaps a little tipsy, I was straight in the gigantic bath amidst a clouds of bubbles. Is there anything more satisfying than a long hot bath on a rainy day? Simple pleasures... Simple pleasures...

After much priming and preening I changed into my favourite TBA dress and we shared a bottle of champagne on the balcony before heading out for dinner. I must admit that it is quite a disconcerting feeling, being a tourist in your hometown but at the same time pleasantly refreshing.

Next morning I stubbornly refused to get out of bed choosing instead to luxuriate in the worlds most comfortable (aswell as quite possibly the worlds biggest) bed accompanied by pancakes with bacon and maple syrup and one of my favourite books, Love in a Cold Climate. All the while romanticising about how lovely it would be to live in a hotel like Eloise or Royal Tenenbaum. Only then it was back to reality - racing to get ready, stuffing everything back in my suitcase before heading out onto the glorious roof terrace to take these pictures and one final look over Edinburgh's Georgian rooftops and the storm clouds gathering over the Firth.

A Day at the Beach

On Saturday we packed up the car and headed for the beach to celebrate my friend Becky's birthday. We barbecued, toasted the birthday girl with Prosecco in jam jars and made friends with a lovely dog named Jess. Then basked in the sunshine chatting until everyone decided to to paddle and play frisbee, so Adam and I snuck off to take some photographs and investigate the rock pools. It was actually so hot that I had to wear my jacket because my shoulders were burning up!

When we returned my dear friends bullied me into swimming in the sea, since I live in Scotland I didn't even think to bring a bikini and ended up swimming (read: jumping in the waves) wearing my nice new frock. I would entirely recommend it, it was the most fun I've had in ages only then a huge wave completely engulfed me and my sunglasses were swept away, never to be seen again. I am really quite heart broken, any ideas where I can find a similar pair?

tba aw eleven

From the very first moment I saw tba's debut collection, I was swept away. Completely and utterly head over heels in love with Binbin McNiven's designs. Each season she continues to steal my heart and AW11 is no different.

What I love about tba is that their pieces are so effortlessly cut in flowing silk and gossamer organza but at the same time are so easy to wear. They are so perfectly thought out that all I ever have to do is choose a pair of shoes and I'm ready. Another thing that keeps me coming back time and time again is their value for money, I have worn my black silk dress with the beaded collar from SS10 to the point that my friends mock me for not owning another party dress but I don't care a bit because its the most perfect dress and I love wearing it. My only regret is that I didn't buy it in Navy and Fawn too!

This season draws inspiration from the 60's, with an added hint of austere 40's. Suggestive sheer panels alongside tba's signature peter pan collars come together in an all together sultry manner while triumphantly remaining delicate and feminine. Out of all the reasons that I love tba, this is why I love wearing their clothes - they are are designed for girls who dress to please themselves and most certainly not boys!

Tutorial: Half Moon Manicure

First off, I have a confession to make. I'm no nail expert, I've never even had a manicure. When I actually paint my nails its usually right before I go out, between sips of gin and tonic with only moments to spare. This method was learned through trail, error and a few stellar tips from my future Mother-in-Law, Lilian. She's true Geordie lady, always perfectly turned out with a standing manicure appointment.

I've always admired half moon manicures but it was only when I was watching Atonement a few weeks ago, where in one scene Emily Tallis lays her perfectly manicured hand on Bryony's shoulder that I really fell in love with them. At first I tried to cover my half moons with stickers usually used for french tips but on my nails they were a little uneven so I tried circular stationary stickers and it worked perfectly. Admittedly its all a little fiddly but if I can turn my hand to it (pun intended) then anyone can.

Basecoat

Until now, I didn't see the point in using a basecoat but its really important here otherwise there will be a distinctive line between the nail and half moon. Start with a quick coat of clear varnish, I used Barry M's "All in one" then once its totally dry stick a sticker over each of your nails. I found the holes in these really useful because I could just line them up with my cuticle.

Once they are all stuck on firmly, with no gaps otherwise the vanish will seep under, paint on two coats of your favourite colour and wait a few minutes. I already had the toothpick to hand for the final stage but I found that they were pretty useful for peeling off the stickers while avoiding any smudges. When all nails are sticker free, paint on a coat of quick dry coating. This was the first of Lilian's tips but after sceptically paying nearly £7 for Save The Nail "45 Second Dry" I am entirely convinced. It does exactly what it says on the bottle and leaves your nails with a super glossy coating, like a 'proper' manicure.

Lilian's second stellar tip is for mini DIY cotton buds made from cotton wool pads and toothpicks. They are perfect for dipping in nail varnish remover and cleaning up any smudges and are so much more accurate than ordinary cotton buds, even the pointed kind. Just put a little NVR on a cotton pad and roll a toothpick on the pad until a little comes away. Smooth it off with your finger and clean off the smudges. Thanks Lillian! x

Sunday Best: Nice and Easy

This weekend Adam and I went to stay at The Glasshouse. Staying in a hotel in my home town felt a little surreal, I couldn't help but feel like a tourist but it was great to see Edinburgh from a different vantage point. On the roof of the hotel is huge terrace over looking the old observatory on Calton Hill and down over the Firth of Forth. Right before we checked out we went to take in the view and in my case, peer tentatively over the edge.

I didn't realise at the time but this outfit is 110% influenced by Alexa Chung's collection for Madewell. The Asos dress is just a sleeveless take on one of her designs and everything else could have been lifted from the lookbook. At first I was mentally congratulating myself for finally pulling together a 'causal' ouftit but once again it has eluded me and all credit must go to Miss Chung. I guess that I just have that collection tattooed on my brain. Thank you, Alexa.

Edit: I've received a few of emails and questions about this dress so I thought it was best to answer them all together. The dress is from Asos Petite, I'm 5'6 so I don't fall into the 'petite' category but I bought one size up and it fits fine. Although it is ivory, its lined in the skirt so no need to worry about showing off your unmentionables, however it isn't lined in the bodice so a white bra is a necessity. The skirt falls a couple of inches above my knee and even with bare legs I wasn't worried about flashing my kickers. If anything, I think it would be quite long on petite girls. If you would like to know anything else, just ask.

Hopetoun House

This weekend Summer finally came to Scotland! We took the opportunity to partake in my favourite summertime activities, snooping around heritage homes and gardens. We decide to visit Hopetoun House, just outside of Edinburgh for a stroll around the park and gaze out over the Firth of Forth.

The weather was so beautiful that I finally had a chance to... low and behold - wear summer clothes! Love were kind enough to send me this dress and just like Carrie I decided to wear it back to front, it just seemed to work better that way.

Every so often you stumble upon a dress, the perfect dress. A dress that slips seamlessly into your wardrobe, a dress that can we worn come rain or shine, a dress that appears to have been made especially for you! Last week I found one such dress in the most unexpected of places - Dorothy Perkins. I didn't think I was a Dotty P kinda girl but I was reading Melle Robot when I saw Laetitia wearing a lovely black lace frock. I went straight over to the DP website, searched 'lace' and hit the jackpot. This darling there waiting of me, on sale no less. I'm very pleased to announce that I am, indeed a Dotty P kinda girl!

Anthropologie

On Tuesday Anthropologie were kind enough to invite me along to the opening of their shop on George Street for cocktails and a snoop around. I've never actually had the pleasure of visiting Anthroplogie before, but from the online shop and the blog posts I've read about their events I knew I was going to be smitten.

The shop itself was a veritable feast for the eyes, the attention to detail was almost overwhelming! The visual merchandising was dreamy, with old tatty treasures mixed amidst the shiny finished off with fresh flowers and even toast. My favourite (the picture didn't quite turn out) was an old pommel horse used as a bookshelf!! Every corner, jar and drawer held something delightful, my mental wish list quickly ran off the page.

Adam and I wandered around entranced, sipping Whisky Mac's with apple and trying to take everything in. Then we came across two dapper chaps from Mhor , shucking oysters. I'm not really one for sea creatures (food) but with Adam goading me and a little encouragement from the Tom Lewis, the head chef at Mhor, I tried one with a whiskey shallot dressing and a wee squeeze of lemon. Low and behold, it was delicious, salty and refreshing not at all what I expected. I even went back for more.

If you are in Edinburgh this Sunday, pop in because Anthropologie are holding another event. I'm especially looking forward to Catherine Zoraida casting trinkets in silver. Aswell as ticking a few items off that wish list! Thank you, Anthropologie for such a lovely evening.

Little Treats

I love little treats, don't you? Little things that you really don't need but brighten up your day. I thought I'd share these with you because I've been raving about them on twitter and they seemed to raise a few questions.

Mini Benefit
I didn't mean to buy all three, really I didn't! I just went to buy a can of diet coke... Only then I noticed the free teeny, tiny Benetint on the cover of Glamour Magazine and was compelled to walk two miles and visit six different shop in order to nab myself mini Posietint and High Beam to complete the trio. All for six pounds sterling! The only problem is that I'm stuck with three copies of a magazine that I have no interest in reading. Hats off to Glamour magazine's marketing department!

The Girl of My Dreams
Dear, sweet, illusive Lula stole a corner of my heart from the very moment I spyed Kirsten Dunst coyly peering from the cover. Now, twice a year I make the pilgrimage to Anologue Books - the best bookshop in Edinburgh, where they always keep a copy for me. Probably because I incessantly hassle them on twitter. Thanks for your stellar service and sorry for being annoying!

Issue 12 is captivating as ever, with interviews from Mia Wasikowska, Kinga Burza and a hoard of beautifully styled editorials. I especially enjoyed Troop Lula by Rory Satran. She writes about her love affair with Girls Scouting and the trials and tribulations of joining an American troop whilst living in London. Rodarte and Orla Kiely have also contributed 'Troop Lula' uniform designs alongside stills from Troop Beverly Hills (yes, that is young Jenny Lewis) and The Parent Trap (with Hayley Mills, not the awful remake) which I haven't seen for years. I wish I could say it was a childhood favourite but I was only three when it was released and in reality I only found it when I was about 17 and completely obsessed with Rilo Kiley. However, I managed to unearth a copy and I am pleased to report that Shelley Long's modified troop leader costume is still wonderful and Jenny Lewis is still cute as a button!

Make Yourself at Home: Sitting Room

That's what Adam said when he saw the pictures and as much as I loath to admit it, I suppose that's how it might appear. However, I doubt any self respecting toff would own that drinks cabinet. As you can see, pretty much everything (with exception of the sofa which was a bit of a splurge) was unearthed at car boot sales or charity shops and cost next to nothing. I would not have it any other way!

It has been a year since we moved in and ever since I posted about our bedroom, I've been meaning to show you the rest of the flat. Then there is that fact that I am ridiculously nosey, I love peering through virtual windows so its only fair that I offer up my home.

I know what your thinking - that is the ugliest piece of furniture you have ever laid eyes on! You're right, it is. Unfortunately I share the same affection for it that I have for kittens with unfortunate markings, so ugly that I just can't help but love them. I've been ummming and ahhhing ever since we bought it (£15, no prizes for guessing why) over painting it but I just never seem to get around to it. When the time comes, I think battle ship grey with tart it up nicely. Can't make it look any worse, can it?

Come in, have a drink, make yourself at home and most importantly have a good nose around!

This weekend my favourite things are 40's style waves, rose lemonade with paper straws and my new Le Comptoir Scandinave sandals from Spartoo.

My fringe has hit that totally awkward stage in the growing out process. Too long to be a blunt fringe but not quite long enough to be swept to the side. My solution is a sort of side swept quiff and 40's style curls. I'd always thought those sort of hairstyles were ridiculously hard style but its actually so easy. I just put in a few big rollers with lots of hairspray, wait until they have cooled then brush out the curls and there you have it.

Home, Sweet Home.
It feels so good to be back! I've had so many other commitments over the last couple of weeks that I had to take a short break but its good to be home again.

I don't want to give too much away but here is a little peek at one of the designs I've been working on for Wayward Daughter. I've had a few set backs but now everything is finally coming together and I'm working towards opening my Etsy shop in the very near future. I really wanted to wear this in an outfit post but the weather (as close to a hurricane as Scotland has ever seen) had other ideas.

While 70mph winds uprooted trees in the park by my flat (this actually happened), I happily worked on dress patters, with a little encouragement from those soft spoken fellows on Classic FM and pot after pot of rose tea. I didn't notice at first but my teacup totally matches the dress fabric, completely coincidental. Scouts honour!

While I was working on this dress I kept thinking of one of my favourite Wayward Daughters, young Veda Pierce in the HBO adaptation of Mildred Pierce. All of Ann Roth's costumes are such an inspiration to me but young Veda's are especially so. I inadvertently started to reference it as 'Veda' in my drafting notes so here you have my 'Veda' dress in blue (it will also come in dusky pink) I think that you Miss Pierce would have felt at home in her namesake dress, don't you?

Leeds Guide

42 The Calls
The first thing I did after dropping my bags was to run a bubble bath. After sampling all the lovely products (the best thing about staying in a hotel, right?) and soaking in the bath with a relaxing glass of fizz. I tackled my hair into a sort of faux bob and put on my favourite dress, then I tripped off downstairs to meet the girls for dinner at Gaucho.

Gaucho
I'm afraid that I have a serious blogger faux pas to admit. I didn't take my camera to the restaurant. I know… I know… rookie mistake! Thing is, I'm used to dining with civilians, who frown at my snapping away whilst thing are trying to eat. I'm disgraced because the restaurant was spectacular and the food was heavenly to say the very least. I'm a born, though not necessarily breed carnivore (My Mother, a vegetarian craved meat so badly whilst pregnant with me that she had to give into my demands… that's how she tells it anyway.) so Goucho was truly a dream come true.

We were assigned a rather charming waiter ho presented us with the different of beef and guided us through the chefs cooking recommendations. This had to be my favourite part of the experience, actually being able to see the quality of the meat and the size of the cuts made choosing so much easier. Truth be told, I would have liked to touch it too but I think that may have been over stepping the mark. However, I love to cook red meat so this worked for me but I can completely understand if you're reading this and wincing. If so, please accept my apologies. I know it isn't for everyone.

I ordered a fillet, rare to medium rare and that is exactly what I received. Quite literal perfection, it cut like a hot knife through butter. Infact, if I had been alone (and not wearing my favourite dress) I may have eaten it like an apple. I'm joking… but seriously, it was the best steak I have ever eaten! Dessert was another triumph, Dulce de Leche cheesecake with chocolate sauce. Need I say more?

The next morning, I was up bright and early with lost of time to deliberate over what to wear and enjoy breakfast in bed. This was thankfully delivered through an ingenious little hatch so there wasn't even any need to scare the hotel staff with my crazy backcombed hair, a remnant of the previous night.

County Arcade
Located right in the heart of the Victoria Quarter. Aside from being absolutely stunning, it houses some great shops. Perfect for a spot of shop of window shopping at Vivian Westwood or to swoon over the Tillie at Mulberry and the brogues in Church's. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to peruse the food hall at Harvey Nichols either. I found a tin of rose buds that I have since used to infuse spirits.

This perhaps set the tone for the day because afterwards I ventured into Rose and Co. Where I lost almost an hour smelling all manner of floral scented delights and peering into apothecary drawers. Rose is my favourite, favourite scent so it was quite blissful. The amount of choice was quite overwhelming but I managed to maintain a little restraint and only bought some lavender salve and rose bath salts. I seriously cannot recommend their Rose Salve enough. I swear, I could not survive the winter without it.

Corn Exchange
Originally this building housed the corn exchange for Leeds and the surrounding counties. it now houses all manner of boutiques but it still retains the most beautiful domed glass ceiling which originally enabled merchants to clearly view the corn they were purchasing (just a wee bit of history for you).

There are lots of great shops in the Corn Exchange but my favourite was Mki, the entire shop encompasses a preppy, nautical theme - Leatita wrote an insightful post on the movement behind the Mki aesthetic. In short, if you like Ivy League style, Breton Stripes and a nautical pallet (sans red) then this the shop for you!

Best of British: Nadinoo Interview

I'm sure that Nadinoo needs no introduction, Nadia Izruna's designs have been popping up on blogs all over the world and deservedly so. With each collection it as if Nadia looks deep into our hearts and creates pieces to to satisfy of deepest (dress hungry) desires. Each Nadinoo piece is lovely made by hand from Nadia's designs, using delicately patterned Liberty fabric, making each piece a treasured addition to any wardrobe.

Nadia was so kind as to answer a few questions for Wayward Daughter about her design inspirations and Nadinoo's background.

Where did your passion for sewing and design begin?
I have always had a great love for clothes ever since I was a little girl. My Grandma’s neighbour first showed me how to sew on her old singer when I was 9 years old, we made tiny clothes for all my dolls which I thought was magical. I finally got my own sewing machine at 18 when I was ready to pursue a career in fashion and I can’t say I’ve ever looked back!

What made you decide to start Nadinoo?
I loved the idea of hand sewing a garment that is special and unique for the lovely lady who wears it. It was my chance to create a label that was true to my taste and influences; clothes that are pretty and individual that I would happily wear everyday.

Who or what inspires your lovely designs?
Old photos of my grandmother, pretty furniture, fabrics, vintage silhouettes from markets or old films... Something as simple as a walk in the English countryside can inspire me. My head is always working away churning ideas and new designs that are just bursting to come to life.

You design for three fictional girls, Pixie, Fleur and Lula. Are they based around real people?
Very loosely although they have evolved every season becoming three unique moods and personalities. Designing within this enchanted world allows me to build a story for every garment giving it life and character. This season Pixie has taken on a little tomboy roll ready for mischief and adventure. Lula is up to her usual tricks luring in the boys with her girlish ways and come untie me bows. Fleur is enjoying lying among the flowers watching the clouds go by while her dress floats and dances in the wind…

If you had to pick a favourite season to design for what would it be?
I’ve always been in love with the sunshine so Spring & Summer are a delight to design for, imagining how each style will be worn and enjoyed is so exciting filling me endless ideas!

Which designers do you admire?
I enjoy other fun, playful and vintage inspired designers such as Orla Kiely, Eley Kisimoto, Twenty Seven Names, and so many others…

If you could live in any era when would you choose?
My answer for this will probably change from one season to the next but today I would love to go back to the 60’s and experience the excitement in fashion, music and interior design.

If you could dress anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?
I would love to dress Zooey Deschanel and see her dancing, singing and acting in all our Nadinoo creations. She is such a doll I don’t think I would ever tire dressing her…

Do you have any advice for novice seamstresses?
Design and make clothing that you truly love and enjoy every process along the way. If you need more skills and advice there are so many good blogs, courses and helpful books on the market with great sewing tips. I really hope to put together a sewing book in the next year with a selection of Nadinoo patterns to encourage more ladies to start sewing their own lovelies. There is so much pleasure is finishing a garment knowing that it was once only fabric and thread.

And finally, what can you tell us about the new collection?
Nadinoo Summer 11 is a breath of fresh air, full of lazy sun washed days. They are easy throw on dresses, tops, shorts and tops in soft pastels and Liberty printed cottons. I’m especially in love with the Lula’s untie me tops which are a little cropped with bows, I will be wearing mine with a long floaty Summer breeze skirt and a pair of comfy flats. I'm Starr from A Thought is the Blossom and I live in a small Southern state in the US called Arkansas. We don't do fancy tea time here and we certainly don't use rose dripped china in the afternoons, rather we drink sweet iced tea out of plain ole' plastic cups to the tune of a good book or maybe even a BBQ (if we're lucky).

I'm probably the least knowledgeable person to be drafting a post about British things, seeing as I've never tackled the terrain or experienced the culture myself, but I'm thrilled that Cait has asked me to take part in all things British and I'll do my best to keep up with all of the other lovely posts we've seen this month.

Truth be told, I'm dazzled by the Brits! They're such an endearing flock of folk. First there's the accent that just makes everything sound that much better, then the school uniforms (which I was never made to wear, so I'm mesmerized by them) and the quirky words in their text that don't seem to translate to anything in American English, and the history; so much good history. These are things that may seem plain to the locals, but to a foreigner like me, they're enthralling.

I'd say the most relatable British thing that I try to emulate nearly everyday in my life is the fashion! Who knows where there history really lies, but I like to think things like satchels and oxfords and trench coats are very preppy British things. They remind me of English schoolboys which isn't a bad thing at all.

I know... I know... Best of British should have finished yesterday but I've been a little sidetracked with the annoying business of 'real life' so it is will be with us for another week. Trust me, this is a good thing. I have three lovely giveaways for you and aswell as the final guest post and an interview with darling Nadinoo.

After the festivities for the Royal Wedding this weekend, I just wanted to kick off my shoes and relax with a pot of tea and a stack of books. How good do those pies at Canteen look? I can't wait to eat there next weekend when I'm in London. We have recently shuffled the furniture around and planted window boxes in our living room so the bay window is my favourite place to sit. Well, it beats my windowless matchbox of a 'study' any day.

I couldn't help but utilize my Edward VIII teacup, which is usually display purposes only. I'm not a crazy royalist but I do have a soft spot for old Ed VIII. He has been my favourite King, ever since I read that he once vaulted out of a window at Buck Pal, ran across the park and hailed a black cab (A KING TAKING A TAXI!!!) All to visit Mrs. Simpson instead of meeting with his private secretary. And then I discovered that he referred to his duties as 'Kinging'. Plus he abdicated the throne for love, what a dear.

I've been wearing this TBA dress non stop since the delivery arrived from Asos, albeit 4 days late... tisk, tisk. Despite being AW10 I think its perfect for Spring weather, especially with my new Cop Copine sandals.

Best of British: Doris Anne -Feather & Things

Hello everyone! I'm Kala from Doris Anne feathers & things. When Cait approached me to be apart of Best of British month I was beyond excited, who wouldn't be?!

The first thought that comes to mind when I think of Britain is the 60's. So many amazing designers, musicians and artists came from England in the 1960's and changed fashion in the hugest way possible! So, with that said… I decided to take this time to live out my dream of being a part of the movement and turn a day into being a 22 year old girl living in Britain in the 1960's!

It would probably go something like this…

I'd start the day off at my favorite cafe, drinking a charming cup of tea and eating a little something decadent! After finishing up I'd find myself shuffling through records at my favorite music shop!

While dancing around the music shop and picking up a few of my favorite records, I would decide to go shopping for clothing and books! Perfect combination, right?

I'd end the day purchasing a handful of books and some pretty collared dresses, because every English girl needs a collared dress!

Now… to be honest that wasn't exactly how my day went. As much as I'd like to say I'm a British girl living in the 60's, I'm actually a girl from a small town in Southern Oregon who loves and lives vicariously through her vintage, British inspired clothing.

A few of my favourite things

My name is Cait and I'm addicted to cookery books! If my home were ablaze and my dearest were safe I would save my books, not my clothes. Its got to the point where I no long have space store them and they are just stacked up on the floor next to the bookshelves. Right now British Baking by Oliver Peyton is my favourite.

Issue 6 of Cellardoor is hot off the press! If you like the look of these Spring treats you can find the recipes on pages 84 - 87 alongside my previously mentioned cocktail recipe. I have since decided to name the naughty rose tea cocktail a 'Mitford Sister', after my favourite Wayward Daughters.

I've been introducing some pastels into my life, a blouse covered in cute ponies and toadstools, pale pink brogues, pastel nail varnish and treats from Rose & Co.

I'm fast developing an addiction to Prestat Rose and Violet Cremes. They are so beautifully packaged and taste blissful! Like an English country garden in Summer. They even made an Easter Egg, which I devoured too quickly to take any pictures...Oops!

The great sandal search is on. I always start early because I'm picky as can be when it comes to sandals but these Le Comptoir Scandinave sandals from Spartoo have already caught my eye.

In keeping with the Best of British theme, I asked my dear friend (Queen of mixtapes) Fifi of Kiss on The Lips to put a mix together. She went all out and I adore the finished result. I've been listening to it all week, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. You should head over to her blog because I have it on good authority that her debut lookbook will be published presently.

Best of British: Early Summer

One of my favourite British traits has to be baring as much pallid skin as possible, the moment temperatures rise about 15°C. I'm not usually a culprit but this week it was so unseasonably warm that I had no choice. We took the opportunity to walk down the hill to the harbour and enjoy the sunset with a nice drink.

Dress - Vintage, Skirt & Brogues - Primark, Sunglasses - H&M, Heart Box-Bag - Urban Outfitters.

I bought this dress almost two years ago in a tiny vintage shop in Montmartre while we were in Paris. It was a complete shambles with so many rails that I literally had to squeeze through the door but since these kind of shops are inevitably where the best treasures are found I braved it. I'm glad that I did because I found this handmade frock for only €10. I've been wearing it with my favourite bag and shoes of the moment.

I hope everyone is enjoying the bank holiday weekend, I'm in sunny Aberdeen riding rollercoaters (my least favourite pastime), drinking copious Tea Vodka Cocktails and a little relaxation. x

Best of British: Louder Than Silence

Hi there Wayward Daughterettes, we're Sally and Ross from Louder than Silence. When Cait asked us to be part of her wonderful Best of British month, we started to think about what we love most about Britain, and we both came to the realisation that it was our adopted hometown, the fair city of London. And what do we like most about London? That's easy - the parks, the markets and the pubs! So here are some pictures from a typical LtS Sunday involving these three things.

First up we headed to one of the most gorgeous spots in London, Primrose Hill, which affords beautiful views over the city - it's definitely worth the steep climb to the top! After we'd had our fill of sunshine, Thatcher's rosé cider and strawberries (clichéd but so good!), we headed down to Camden market for a spot of vintage shopping and a mooch around the markets. We then rounded off the day nicely in one of our perennial favourite drinking holes, the Edinburgh Castle - rather fitting for this blog, isn't it?!

And of course we couldn't resist wearing a few quintessential British things, in the form of a bowler hat, leather satchel and loafers (her), and a vintage bad taste shirt (him). Sally knows she's rather biased, but she can't help but think there's something about British men that gives them the ability to pull off ironic attire like this, don't you think?

Hello lovely readers! I’m Maria from Lulu Letty. I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am to be participating in the Best of British month on Cait’s blog!

It’s probably not much of a secret, but I’m a huge Anglophile. Tracing it back to the beginning, I believe my British obsession began when I was a little girl with my parents’ love of 80s New Wave (in particular New Order) and continued on to high school with the first time I read Pride and Prejudice. I wanted to be Elizabeth and meet my Darcy. My husband and I even attended a six week UK study abroad program in 2002.

Some of my happiest blogging moments have occurred when people actually think I’m British. I’m sure it has something to do with my rural Michigan setting that eerily resembles the English countryside or maybe more so my heavily influenced British style. The floral prints, wellington boots, leather school satchels, waxed canvas coats, all things tweed and of course brogues…I love it all!

Sunday Best: Basking in the Sunshine

This weekend was exactly what I needed, flea markets, a few drinks with friends and lots of relaxation. On Sunday the sun was shining so we packed an impromptu picnic and settled down in the park to read and drink Earl Grey Tea Cocktails. Adam choose The Observer and I read Supper Club by Kerstin Rodgers. If you are cookery book fiend like me, you must add this book to your collection. It's so beautifully put together and so interesting. I have no intention of starting a supper club but that hasn't stopped me reading all about how to run one, plus the recipes are pretty damn tasty too!

After a while we packed everything up and walked along the harbour to share a poke o' chips. I wore my pinafore, the same TBA blouse from my last post and finally gave my Heart Shaped Box-Bag its first outing.

Look out for a very similar cocktail recipe in Cellardoor's upcoming Spring issue.

Quebecs Hotel - 9 Quebec Street, Leeds.

Last Thursday I packed my bags and set off for Leeds to meet up with Laetitia, Kit and Natacha from Mango PR. At Waverly I boarded a Cross Country train with my heaving bags and settled down to watch the beautiful countryside fly by. Four cups of tea (with real milk, no UHT), a few Duchy biscuits later and a couple of episodes of The Kennedy's I arrived in Leeds station.

Please forgive me as I skip my first day and night, I'll come back to them next week when I've finished editing my hoard of pictures... After a glorious nights sleep at 42 The Calls and a tour of Leeds from the lovely ladies at Marketing Leeds I headed off to Quebecs to meet Adam. I arrived at The Peppermint Suite and I could hardly believe my eyes when I stepped inside. Instead of a classic hotel suite it was split into two levels. The room must have been at least 14 feet high and easily housed a mezzanine accessed by a spiral staircase.

After luxuriating in the gigantic bath, we headed downstairs for a few drinks in The Oak Room which was quite spectacular. Entirely paneled with intricate panels of carved oak, with lions and cherubs peeking out from every cornor. Unfortunately all the sunshine was too much for this plaid Scot and I had to retire early with a nasty headache but the next morning after the most relaxing sleep, breakfast in bed and a luxurious soak in the gigantic bath I was ready for another day in the sun.

I was very sad, indeed when it came to repack our cases and check out but we snuck in a few pictures before we left. I wore a silk TBA blouse and linen skirt with matching bow, which was perfect for exploring Leeds in the sunshine.

Best of British: The Velvet Bow

Hello folk, I'm Jessie from The Velvet Bow and I am thrilled to be here celebrating Best of British month with you all. But first I'll need to get something off my chest. I'm not *actually* British. Don't let my pale complexion and habit of wishfully dressing for cold weather fool you, I'm from a city called Perth on the hot west coast of Australia. I like to think of myself as a British girl at heart though and I don't think it will be too long before I jump ship and move to London myself.

I first visited London last December and I fell in love with the city and the way all the girls dressed. I realised that subconsciously my style was already very similar with my penchant for peter pan collars, cameos, loafers and brogues, cute floral dresses, faux fur coats, 60's winged eyeliner and satchel bags, so I thought I would share an outfit inspired by my visit. Funnily enough my blouse, coat and shoes all ended up being from Topshop. I think it's probably better for my health that we don't have a store here, as much as I wish for one!

Tucked away in a little alley of Perth there is an arcade called London Court. I had always thought of it as a bit of a tourist trap, but when I arrived to take the photos I was pleasantly surprised. London Court is a mish mash of pokey little Brit-themed shops selling English sweets, antiques and heirlooms, tea and giftwares, and at once I honestly had the feeling that I was back in the land I love so much. I sat down in front of a giant picture of Henry VIII and alternated between flicking through Luella's Guide to English Style and tourist watching. A fine morning out indeed.

I'm a huge fan of the Stella Artois advertising campaigns, their styling is always so defined with an air of old school glamour. Needless to say, I was rather excited when I was asked to style an outfits for a date with Jacques D’Azur at Cannes Film Festival.

I choose to style an outfit for a day lounging by the pool and another for attending a film premier. The first is a playful look with a slightly nautical theme, the bikini is Miu Miu, the dress Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony and the red sandals are Ecote at Urban Outfitters. The second look is simple, yet glamorous. Miu Miu dress and shoes with a dainty slick of Mac's Ruby Woo.

Best of British: Vintage Reflection

Hey all, I'm Amy from Vintage Reflection.

When I was asked to be apart of the Best of British month, I was over the moon. Straight away I started thinking up things that represented British style to me. On my list was Topshop, Brogues and Edwardian school uniforms these things conger up the best of British to me.

What Im wearing - Topshop jacket, vintage dress and hat, shoes office, bag Urban Outfitters, necklace DIY, belt H&M.

While looking through my wardrobe for outfit inspiration armed with my list, I came upon this much loved dress. I love the lace collar and the Edwardian style to it, something about this dress and jacket are the perfect combo. The jacket is years old from Topshop but I love it so. I think its the classic style and fabric that keep me coming back to this little beauty. I love wearing it and teaming it with this dress, I feel very prim and popper in this outfit.

I think brogues are a true British statement, I'm really happy how they've made it into mainstream fashion as it means I'm able to buy all different styles of them, these are my newest pair. I went for a more girly than usual pair, with them having a little heel. I really enjoyed the challenge of styling a very British outfit and I hope I've done Cait proud! Thanks for having me.

Best of British - Emily's Guide to West London

Hello! I'm Emily from Me and My Polar Bear and I am beyond honoured to have been invited to write this blog post about some of my favourite places in London - Thank you Cait!

We've recently moved back to London after spending 3 years in Cambridge and have had so much fun rediscovering some of our previous haunts (and finding new ones), I hope you enjoy them!

1. High Street Kensington

Welcome to one of my favourite streets in the whole wide world. Every time we head off shopping to Oxford Street, we wish we hadn't bothered (except for the AMAZING hot chocolate at Apostrophe - seriously, try it).

In amongst Topshop, Urban Outfitters, American Apparel, Cos (which deserves an entire blog post in it's own right) there is the jewel in the crown - The Whole Foods Market. The bottom floor is an amazing world of every variety of fresh fruit and vegetables you can imagine, self-service rice and other grains, make-your-own muesli, and grind-your-own nut butter. There is a whole counter of different types of sausages, and I have never tasted better steak.

The first floor is row after row of self-service meals, a cheese room (yep, a whole room!) and deli counter, and of course the bakery. Mountains of breads, cookies, brownies and everything else you can possibly think of.

The top floor has the only place we ever eat lunch on a Saturday - a massive canteen where everyone can choose the type of food they want & then eat altogether. The mexican and middle eastern counters come particularly highly recommended. Phew! Shall I move on?

2. Old Brompton Cemetery

It's slightly creepy and little bit weird, but the most amazing place. It's almost a mile long and a haven for wildlife and photographers. It is however at its most surreal when the peace is broken by a roaring crowd from Stamford Bridge stadium which backs on to it! Fact of the day: Apparently Beatrix Potter named most of her characters after names on headstones in the cemetery...

3. Kings Road

I love Kings Road. I know it's super posh and filled with impossibly beautiful women with their perfect families, but it's so lovely to walk down with such gorgeous houses in the most amazing Mews's. Plus, it has an incredible Anthropologie, The Big Easy (best. burgers. ever.) and a Heals for all your homeware desires.

4. Notting Hill

I know, I know, I'm basically trying to lead some dream life I can't afford, but Notting Hill really is lovely for a wander around. Particularly at the moment whilst the blossom is out and the sun shining. Portobello market is awesome if you can stand the crowds, and it's filled with tiny independent shops that just don't survive anywhere else. Another favourite (being a baking fiend) is Books for Cooks which is jam packed filled with cookery books of every description. Westbourne Grove has some really stunning shops and cafes, although sadly my budget doesn't stretch to most, Aubin & Wills is great.

5. South Kensington

And finally, the Natural History Museum. I love it. If you haven't been, you must. And while you're at it, round your visit off with a Bens Cookie. You won't regret it.

Sunday Best: Life in a Cold Climate

Please bear with me, as I am full of gripes and moans today. It feel so good to be back posting an outfit. Apologies for my absence, I've missed it so! Last weekend I had a little bit (alot) of camera trouble - Adam dropped our brand new camera and smashed the filter which in turn jammed itself firmly onto the lens. Thankfully a lovely technician sawed it off for me and all is well but I've learned a valid lesson... Always use a filter, it might just save your favourite lens.

I always seem to be grumbling about the weather... a thoroughly British trait in itself and I would hate to disappoint. The last few days we have had 55mph winds, showers and blinding sunshine. Not exactly pleasant weather for taking a stroll let alone pictures but I braved the elements anyway.

Mac - Topshop, Satchel - Vintage, Hat- UO, Clogs - ASOS

The finished result was mostly ruined by my disgruntled face and/or my skirt blowing all over the place. AND my freshly turned under 'do was utterly ruined. These are the best of a bad bunch, which unfortunately only features my all familiar coat. Underneath my favourite mac (go to coat whilst the seasons change) I had a Brownie- Guide inspired outfit but it will have to wait for another day. I tell you, bloggers in warm climes have it easy. Huff-puff!

Best of British: Earl Grey & Chocolate Cupcakes

Welcome to April! It's been so hard not to let this slip up until now but... All this month Wayward Daughter will be hosting 'The Best of British'. Some of my favourite bloggers will be contributing Brit themed outfit posts and city guides, alongside an interview or two and if all goes to plan Wayward Daughter's first giveaway. I hope you like it!

I haven't been very good at posting recipes like I said I would, mostly because my baked goods don't last long enough to be photographer. Adam is very good at sneaking them off to share around the office but I don't mind, its nice to share.

Anyway... What is the most British thing you can think of? Topshop? HM Queen Liz and her corgies at Buck Pal? The Bower Hat? I'd say that it has to be A Nice Cup of Tea. Brewed strong in a chipped mug, with half a pint of milk, four sugars and a packet of chocolate digestives or a delicate blend poured from a china teapot into a fancy cup upon an equally fancy saucer accompanied by a freshly baked scone, a selection of preserves and Cornish clotted cream. Either way, we love our tea.

This recipe meets somewhere in the middle, it is strong and accompanied by chocolate but the Earl Grey is delicate and if you hold back on the icing (I don't) it's surprisingly light. It is ever so slightly altered from one of my style icon Gizzi Erskine's recipes but all credit goes to her.

6 Earl Grey teabags
150ml boiling water
100g unsalted butter, melted and cooled, plus extra for greasing
3 large free-range eggs
150g soft dark brown sugar
100g light muscovado sugar
250g self-raising flour
120g plain chocolate (70% cocoa solids), melted and cooled
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
1 tsp baking powder
3 tbsp Greek yoghurt

Icing
4 Earl Grey teabags
100ml boiling water
3 tbsp light muscovado sugar
550g icing sugar
75g butter
200g cream cheese

Serves 12

1.Preheat the oven to 180ºC. Place the Earl Grey teabags in a cup and cover with the boiling water. Leave to stew for 5 mins, then squeeze out the teabags and discard, leaving the really strong tea to cool a little. Line 12 hole muffin tray with cupcake cakes and set aside.

2.Place all the cake ingredients, including the tea, into a food processor and blend until you have a smooth batter. Divide between cupcake cakes (an icecream scoop is handy for this). Bake in the oven for 20-30 mins, or until you can stick a metal skewer into the centre and it comes away clean. Leave to cool.

3. To make the icing place the Earl Grey teabags in a small pan and cover with the boiling water. Leave the tea to stew for 5 mins, then remove the teabags, squeezing out the liquid as you go. Add the sugar to the tea, bring to the boil and boil for 5 mins until syrupy. Leave to cool for 10 mins.

4. While it is cooling, beat the icing sugar into the butter with an electric whisk until it is evenly mixed. Add in the cream cheese and beat until smooth, finally mix through the cooled earl grey syrup and pipe onto the cooled cupcakes.

Wayward Daughter

I don't know if I've ever mentioned by I absolutely hate "She's got a passion for fashion" I choose it on a whim over 3 years ago. All the names I wanted were taken and I took it (slightly tweaked) from the lyrics of an old Braid song. Back then blogging was a totally foreign concept to me, I never thought it would grow into what it is today... Whatever that might be.

I'm no stranger to name change, when I was 12 years old I sat on my bed and wrote a list of my favourite names then adamantly explained to my Mum that when I moved school I was going to change my name. Clearly I was a precocious little madam because I followed through with it, a few months later I changed my name from Drustic (I feel that it is needless to explain why I choose to change it) to Caitlin. I always think that if you don't like something, do something about it. I have completely outgrown SGAPFF so it was time for a change!

Though I've been thinking about it for a while, I didn't plan the name change. Last night it just felt like the right time so I bought the domain, then Adam redesigned the header and here we are. Sometime over the next couple of days all traffic will be directed straight to waywarddaughter.com. Currently both sites are active but all feeds should be automatically redirected once the switch is fully implemented, you don't have to do anything. Fingers crossed!

Love at First Sight: Beg Bicycles

I can't believe that I hadn't heard of Beg Bicyles until this afternoon. I was scrolling through my reader when I saw this new post on Design Sponge. I though to myself "Cute Bicycles, I wish we had more things like that in the UK" only when I clicked onto their site and saw the prices in BPS, I realised they were a British company. Perfect!

If I didn't already own the bicycle of my dreams, I would be fervently scribbling a note to Santa asking for one of these. Thankfully for me alongside these bespoke bicycles they also sell twee accessories. Leather bound flasks, satchels and a plaid picnic blanket perfect for picnics with cake and rose lemonade.

Even if you aren't looking for a new bicycle or fancy accessories, you should still visit their site. It is so beautifully designed and the styling and photography are blissful. If only read life looked like this...

Spring Wishes

After a few false starts and much wishful thinking, Spring has finally sprung!

As soon as this time of year arrives, I always find myself fighting the urge to Spring Clean with the vigour of a Victorian housemaid. The first casualty is aways the contents of my wardrobe. Fist of all comes the switch around, unpacking all my fair weather clothes from where they are stored (stuffed) in my tower of suitcases. Inevitably this means hauling everything out of cupboards, suitcases and drawers. Making a huge mess and eventually deciding that that I hate everything I own. In preparation for this eventuality I made myself a wish list of Spring treats.

Spring is always assosiated with florals and pale colours, which I like but, as always I am hopelessly devoted to French navy. How cute is this Sailor Coat from Louche at Joy, and the Gretal dress from Dear Creatures at Ruche?

I love florals but not always to wear, I already have a Liberty Suitcase, but that doesn't stop me yearing for another, after all its extra storage for new clothes! For a while now I've been collecting vintage bed linens in white, pink and pale green so this floral bedspread from Urban Outfitters would perfectly compliment them. As for the Liberty Notebook, and Fieldguided Tote, I just really, really want them!

I'm always so amused by the names that fashion magazines come up with to discribe a different colours. Here we could have Camel, Fawn, Tawny or Caramel when really just all in an attempt to avoid the words Brown and Beige. Either way, I'm a fan! I'm already worried about having to pack away my cape coat so I've been searching for a lightweight replacement in the same colour. I love this coat from Louche at Joy, it has a brown corduroy collar and elbow patches and the lining is printed with little Scottish terriers. I do love nice lining fabric! The heart shaped box bag from Urban Outfitters is a must, pefect for wearing with sundresses, cats-eye specticles and these Topshop wooden heels. Perhaps whilst listening to old crackling record on this Crosley record player from Urban Outfitters? Not at all necessary but a girl can dream...

Introducing... The Wayward Daughter

Recently I've had a few emails asking if I am ever going to start selling my 'designs' (Cringe! It sounds so cheesy), like I mentioned I might last Autumn. The answer is yes, I've been working on a small... I use this word tentatively... collection. When I say small, I mean small. It will only be a few select pieces and this denim pinafore is one of them.

There is nothing worse than reading Art-School-Kid style ramblings about their inspirations, most likely written after the fact so I will keep it short and sweet. I love Edwardian children's clothing and in the beginning I wanted to design a pinafore-apron style dress in chambray but it turned out to be rather unflattering. From there I moved on to a straight-up pinafore, which isn't so far removed from denim dungarees so I changed the fabric accordingly. Not exactly a whimsical tale but there you have it.

I took me a really long time to decide on a name but one afternoon I was listening to Classic FM when The Clog Dance from La Fille mal Gardée was played. I don't know why I remembered but I had read before that the English translation is 'The Wayward Daughter'. I instantly decided it the name for me and registered the Etsy account within the hour.

Sunday Best: Breaking The Rules

I'm all for wardrobe rules. I have a very long unwritten list of rules that I shop and dress by - No shoes with ankle straps, No trousers, Always a cinched waist but never a drop waist and Coco's words of wisdom are ever present, too. One of my favourites is "When accessorizing always take off the last thing you put on". And that's only the beginning of the list.

However, I tend to go against classic colour combination faux pas. I'm fully aware that red and green should never be seen but some crazy people (my GBF included) think that black and navy are a No-No. How could I possibly live without them? They are my go-to combination! I feel pretty safe wearing black, grey and blue but adding in brown isn't so easy. I wanted to balance out the brown in the necklace and in the elbow patches of this sweater, they are under there I promise. I was a bit unsure but I always admire Amy's use of grey tights with brown loafers so referred back to my favourite colour combination from last summer.

So here I am, breaking all the rules. I have black,navy, grey and brown all in the same outfit and -Shock-Horror!!- I think it looks alright. Else I wouldn't have worn it.

Simon Filip and The Honey Trees

I'm sure some of you are already familiar with Simon Filip's photography, isn't it lovely? It's always so inspiring, just whimsical enough without becoming twee. I especially like the pictures of his sister and her band The Honey Trees. Not only is Becky Filip easy on the eyes and can style a darling outfit and to top it all off she has the sweetest lullaby voice.

Sunday Best: Blue Valentine

Just when I thought that Spring was really here and it was safe to start planning my Summer wardrobe, Winter hit back with an icy bite. Earlier this week I pinned my favourite Summer looks on Pinterest which btw, I totally love - I was never very good at Tumblr but I'm good at Pinterest so if you want to see all the silly things that I like you can follow me on there. My mind was on Summer... chambray, bicycle rides, straw hats and picnics with ice tea.

Needless to say, I was delighted when I found this straw boater in Oxfam though a little less delighted at the price tag - £14.99. When did charity shopping become so expensive? However, my friend pointed out that it would be twice that from Topshop and there was no way that I was letting a vintage boater pass me by so I bought it and I'm very glad that I did. Expect to see alot more of it from now on.

I had, albeit a little prematurely, planned to wear it with a sheer blouse and light mac but Mother Nature choose to send a gust of icy wind in our direction and it was far too chilly that sort of frippery so instead I choose this dress from Zara. If in doubt, just dress a bit like Alexa Chung, right?

Sunday Best: The Mournful Lament of a Foolhardy Girl

If you follow me on twitter you'll have read that in a moment of madness... well, actually it was more annoyance at my hair constantly hanging in my eyes. I took a blunt pair of kitchen shears to my own hair. I've done it before and doubtless I will do it again but I instantly regretted my actions and I've been mournfully lamenting the loss of my long sweeping fringe ever since. Thankfully hair grows and in the past week or so it has grown at least half a centimeter, not much but just enough to cover my eyebrows and even though I don't like it, I can live with for the meantime.

The only plus side as far as I can am concerned is that I can unearth all the hats that I bought when I sported this fringe last time but didn't suit my dearly departed haircut. I love this felt boater because it has a subtle air of school uniform without being conspicuous. I suppose this is echoed in my dress, I know its quite hard to see under there but its black velvet with a silk peter pan collar.

Even though Spring has finally arrived in Edinburgh, the sun is shining, crocuses are in full bloom and laundry flapping in the breeze, its still quite chilly. I'm still not willing to give up my winter clothes just yet. I need to slowly ease myself into paler hues. I have my work cut out if this outfit is anything to go by...

Love at First Sight: Bow Loafers

Bow Loafers - Miss Selfridge

It has been a very long time since I did a Love at First Sight post but the moment that I saw these shoes I it was time for a revival.

Once again my heart rate quicken, I lost all sense of reason and I instantly purchased these pretty darlings.
I admit that I haven't been impressed with Miss Selfridge of late but their shoes have always been a favourite of mine. These patent dance partners are part of a Limited Edition collection of ten styles. They come in black and camel alongside brogues, chunky sandals and creepers, not all to my taste but definitely worth a look.

All I need now is a dress befitting of such beauties... And maybe a coat and matching hat... And the perfect coloured tights... And...

Sunday Best: Edinburgh

After receiving a snide comment regarding my lineage, it made me think about how I portray myself through this blog. Something that, to be honest, I've never given any thought before and it made me realise that I rarely post pictures taken in Edinburgh as it is typically portrayed. Like most Scots I'm fiercely patriotic, I love my bonny homeland and I love Edinburgh.

I wanted to show you how beautiful and unlike any other city Edinburgh is. With stunning architecture, green open spaces and all my favourite places. Only luck was not on our side, everywhere I wanted to take pictures was far too busy, too cramped to move little own take pictures. We tried to take pictures outside the castle and along the Royal Mile but in typical Scottish temperament it drizzled all afternoon In all the shots I was surrounded by grumpy tourists wearing fluorescent cagoules. And I promise you, there will never be a fluorescent cagoule on this blog.

In order to escape the nasty cagoules, we snuck off into a close (that's an alleyway to those outside of Scotland) and finally got some good shots. My outfit isn't especially Scottish but my skirt is made from plaid (its not affiliated with a clan, so I wouldn't refer to it as tartan) woven right here and my hat isn't so far removed from a Tam O' Shanter cap. I do enjoy a cliche!

Finally when we were too cold to feel our fingers and toes, we hurried off to The Elephant House, where J.K Rowling once spent her afternoons scribbling stories about a boy named Harry with a scar in the shape of a lightening bolt. We drank Earl Grey and ate the worlds best shortbread (in my opinion), which is in the shape of a portly elephant.

It's not quite the Edinburgh that I wanted to show you but it is still the Edinburgh that I love.

Surprisingly this is my first ever fashion week post, in the past I have been too busy with school but that isn't really the reason I haven't posted about it. Mostly I prefer to wait until all the hype has died down, then if the few designers that I follow haven't been splashed over every blog I flick through their collection on Style.com
However, when I saw on twitter that The Like were playing Rachel Antonoff's show I had to have a peek and instantly my heart rate sped up! It is as if she crept into my heart and designed dresses to fit my deepest desires.

First of all the show was actually a cheesy high school disco with The Like playing, cute girls dancing with hot boys and a wayward girl spiking the punch. I didn't think there could be a better concept than her last show - A sleep over complete with bubble bath, ouija board and s'mores, but she thought of one.

I won't go go on and on about how darling the collection is because you can see for yourself. There are peter pan collars, plaid, cat ears, bows, loafers and my favourite part, Bass saddle shoes (from her collaborative collection) that actually match the dress!!!
Forget waiting for autumn, I absolutely need ornate spectacles, tights with hearts on the knee and a red, blue and white plaid jumper right now.

Sunday Best: The Royal Botanic Gardens

I'm more than a little ashamed to admit that it has been 10 days since I updated last. However, I have valid excuses. My birthday was on Monday so naturally that meant celebrating it over a four day weekend, which resulted in a nasty hangover and subsequent head cold. I then spend the rest of the week hauled up in bed reading and drinking tea, which was nice for a while but I'm happy to be back!

This weekend I visited another antique fair, the same one that I mentioned in my previous post. I bought a few small things, a perfect 1960's blouse pattern with the most gigantic collar... not so dissimilar from the one I am wearing here. Aswell as a couple of shabby tins, I'm actually addicted to buying tins and usually Adam forbids me to buy any more save they take over the whole house but I slipped these past him alongside a few other pretty little things. If anyone is interested in my tatty findings then I'll happily show you but don't want to bore you unnecessarily.

We stopped in off in the Botanic Gardens near our flat, en route to the fair. I can't believe that we haven't taken picture there before because its so beautiful, even at this bleak time on year. I was quite impressed with my rock clambering skills given my 5" heels (yes, I actually wore them), the wet steps and temperamental drizzle.

The reason we clambered up there was to get to a mossy waterfall but once we got there everyone in the gardens, or so it seemed, flocked around us to stare while we took pictures. It happens all the time when we're shooting but it always really annoys me... its only a few pictures, people are always taking them so I don't see why they feel the need to stop what they are doing and stare at us. Unsurprisingly I looked disgruntled in all of the waterfall shots so I don't even have anything to show for our trouble.

Then it started to rain again which meant my lovely new umbrella, a birthday gift from my Orla Kiely loving Mum, was put to good use. I actually didn't mean to style my outfit around my umbrella but doesn't it match nicely? Nor did I mean to wear Topshop head to toe but I did. Orange or we can call it 'Blush' if you would like, isn't exactly a colour that I would normally conceive of wearing and truth be told I bought the blouse because I loved the huge crazy collar. Only once I had taken it home I was pleasantly surprised by how many items in my wardrobe that it matches with. However I don't think that I will be purchasing any more orange pieces... sorry, sorry Blush pieces.

Wishing and Hoping

February is cold, bleak and grey. Technically it is my least favourite month of the year but it also the month of my birth so I try to make the best of it. This morning I woke up to a flurry of snow and a literal gale has been raging all day so in order to combat the winter blues I compiled a list of lovely things that I would like to receive on my birthday. Admittedly this was an self indulgent past time but I'm sure that you will like them as much as I do and it brightened up my day.

1. TBA Urban Outfitters (coming soon)
TBA's SS11 collection has been all over the Internet and it is perfect as always. I think my greatest wish in life is to wear TBA everyday.

2. Union Jack Umbrella from London Undercover
My heart skipped a beat when I first saw this umbrella from London Undercover, it's it the cutest? It also comes in a lovely dusky shade with plaid instead of gingham. It rains alot in Scotland, I think I need them both...

3. Liberty Tana Lawn in Tom's Jet, Floribunda & Nina
All seamstresses love Liberty fabric, it's the thimble law! I would love like to make pretty dresses in all these fabrics but at £20 a meter I don't know if I would be able to pluck up the courage to even cut it.

4. Lula Petal Blouse from Nadinoo
Let us not speak, instead we shall marvel at it's perfection.

5. Books - Style Me Vintage by Belinda Hay and British Baking by Peyton & Byrne
The first book is an absolute necessity, my birthday party is going to be 60's themed and I will be attempting to style my hair like Joan Holloway. This book is full of vintage hair tutorials using modern techniques so hopefully it will teach me how . As for the second, I'd better keep on wishing and hoping because it isn't actually published until March (I didn't actually realise that when I made the montage). Move over cupcakes, its all about British teatime treats.

6. Cookie Cutters
These are also a wish that is unlikely to come true since they are made by an American company that don't ship to the UK but aren't they lovely. You can see them on Ellie's blog, it's all her fault that I love them.

My favourite part of writing a blog is virtually 'meeting' people with the same tastes and interest from all over the world. However, I realised that in my previous post I only included one blog written by a fellow Brit. I read blogs from Helsinki to Melbourne but it is always nice to read posts from closer to home. Here are my favourites - The Best of British, if you will.

I would love nothing more than to spend a day thrifting and drinking tea with all of these darlings but in the meantime I will settle for livingvicariously through their posts.

Hello Mr Fox, written by Hannah, a fellow Edinburgh blogger. We seem to be few and far between so it is nice to know that someone else is battling with the wind and rain. Everything about Hannah's blog is simply perfect. Her photography never fails to inspire, her thifting skills are exquisite as is her eye for detail.

Sadie's Wardrobe is a treasure trove of vintage finds and hand sewn delights written by lovely Sadie... believe it or not. I love reading about her latest sewing projects and thrfting bargains but most of all I love her cute 60's inspired style and patent loafers.

Louder than Silence, written by Sally and Ross, a darling and rather stylish couple living in London. Sally is a girl after my own heart, rocking pretty collars, bows and big hair. Perfectly accented by Ross, a typography loving dapper chap with amazing shoes, just look at them! Together the take us with them as they explore London's pubs, markets and vintage haunts. They remind me of my myself and my boyfriend which makes me love their blog even more.

Turkish Delight Cupcakes

It's been a long time since I shared a recipe on this blog but since turning on the radio, donning a frilly apron and rustling up something yummy is one of my favourite things to do I thought it was time to change that. Tinkering in the kitchen is such a huge part of my life and since my blog is all about things that I love, I've decided to share a recipe with you once a month.

January's recipe is Turkish Delight cupcakes which have been featured in the Winter edition of Cellardoor magazine. My all time favourite scent is rose and after tasting Turkish Delight flavoured hot chocolate I decided to bake the flavours into a cupcake. The cupcake is moist and chocolaty with a delicate rosy centre and icing to match. Pretty much the perfect treat to bake your beau on St. Valentines Day.

Sunday Best: In Love & Wardrobe

There are some items that you simply fall head over heels with, you absolutely must own them! This is my typical shopping method. I see, I fall, I buy. Only more often that not, once the shopping bags are unpacked, the tags ripped off and the receipt promptly lost. Upon finding that your newly beloved item does not fit as snugly into your wardrobe as you dreamed it to, the romance is swiftly over.

But then there are the pieces that you stumble across, the ones that creep quietly into your wardrobe without you really noticing them. The ones that you come to adore and can not live without.

This whole outfit is a perfect example, I didn't buy anything in a lustful frenzy. These purchases were either well thought out or found by chance. Singularly they don't fit into my usual 'style' but I like them and I think they work together. I felt comfortable wearing them and that's the only good test of an outfit as far as I am concerned.

Tutorial: How to print a tshirt

Ever since I posted about the Francoise Hardy T-shirt, I've been receiving comments and emails asking for more information. So I've made a short tutorial for you. I did say previously that you only need three things - A printed image, a T-shirt and a tube of Dylon Image Maker which isn't strictly true but the rest of the items are things that are likely to be lying around or forgotten in the back of drawers.

Instead of a using a photograph this time I used a scan of my favourite Keats poem, Bright Star. Naively, I choose to type it on our old type writer. A task that is far easier said than done, about seven attempts later I had a copy with only a few small mistakes. Those girls at Stirling, Cooper, Draper, Pryce make it look a breeze but let me tell you... It is not! I scanned the typed page, rectified my mistakes in Photoshop, re-sized and flipped it then printed it at 300dpi.

I choose a neutral toned men's t-shirt from H&M, they are only a few pounds and come in most colours. This one off sets the brown paper nicely and is the perfect colour for Spring, whenever it comes along. I didn't actually mean for the print to look distressed, I was just a little over zealous when I removed the paper. I don't think it matters here but if you would like a pristine print then go slowly and gently whilst sponging off the paper.

There are a few important tips to remember when printing. All new fabric should be washed before printing to ensure that any finish that is often on new clothing is removed, otherwise it will impair the print. The image should be 300dpi and flipped horizontally, otherwise it will be back-to-front on the final print. Finally it is best to print on light fabric otherwise your print will not be as clear as it could be.

You will need:
Printed of photocopied image
Tube of Dylon Image Maker
T-shirt
Rolling Pin
Plastic bags/Grease proof paper
Old tea towel
Paint brush
Sponge

First cut out the image and work out where you want to print it. I mark this in with pins because once the paper is wet its much harder to put it in the right place. Once you've done this, put a plastic bag inside the t-shirt so that the paste can't seep through.

Place image printed side up onto grease proof paper, NOT newspaper like in my picture as the news print can run into your print. Squeeze the paste onto your image and brush over with a clean paintbrush. The image should be covered completely, especially the edges.

Place the image on the fabric, paste side down. Smooth the paper down to ensure that there are no wrinkles. Cover with an old tea towel and roll over with a rolling pin, horizontally then vertically. Leave to dry thoroughly, the instructions on the packet say to leave it over night but I've always left it next to warm radiator and it's always worked out fine.

Once dry, wet the paper thoroughly with a water soaked sponge. With your finger or sponge, gently begin rubbing until the top layer of the paper can be rolled off. Leave the t-shirt to dry and remove the remainder of the fuzz from the image using a damp sponge.

Finally, allow your garment to dry thoroughly. Place a few drops of Image Maker onto your image and rub in gently with a piece of cloth to seal the transferred image.

Washing:
Do not wash garment within the first 72 hours. Wash item by hand in lukewarm water or in a washing machine, on a 30°C gentle cycle. Turn garment inside out prior to washing, dry garment and do not iron over the transfer.

I hope this is helpful but if you have any other questions, I'll do my best to answer them. If you decide to try it out, I'd love to see how it turns out and what you choose. Send me pictures!

The Like

As you can see, I've given (I didn't actually code it, I just choose the layout) the blog a fresh coat of paint. I didn't want to make any drastic changes so the design is the same just a little prettier. Mostly things have just been shuffled around. I've added a some links under the header so that old posts are easier to find and my list of favourite blogs now has it's own dedicated page. There is also a new About Me page, which I'll be adding some FAQ's to soon.

I've busy creating a Facebook page and exploring Chictopia, which I absolutely love. I can't believe its take me so long to sign up because its definitely where all the well dressed girls hang out!

I also wanted to share some pictures of my favourite band of 2010, The Like. It's clear that they look amazing but what is more important is that they sound amazing and I think they do. So much so that I've basically listened to Release Me on repeat since it was released last summer. This video was shot by Gia Coppola , who also shot Orla Kiely's SS11 video, for Zac Posen's collection for Target.

The moment that I saw Annie Monroe stroll out onto the isty bisty stage at King Tut's last September I felt a nasty pang of jealous. I want her hair! I've been fighting off the urge to hack mine off ever since and all of James D Kelly's the beautiful pictures aren't helping either. What do you think?

Sunday Best: The Subtle Art of Casual Styling

After having so many occasions to dress up over the festive period and yet another fall of snow this weekend, I haven't felt like wearing anything fancy. Instead I've been dressing in simple outfits like this one.

I can't help but feel once the festivities are over, fresh flurries of snow and frosty temperatures cease to be enchanting and instead become a tiresome bore. With this in mind, I raise my glass to all the other bloggers who trudge out in the snow to take pictures while their fingers loose all feeling and their cheeks are pinched with cold. It would be so easy to hibernate all Winter and blog again in Spring, so Thank you! I appreciate it and I'm sure everyone else does too.

Ideally I would have worn this outfit with heels, heeled desert boots to be specific but I am yet to find the perfect pair. Any suggestions? The pinafore is one of my favourite items of clothing, it's so versatile that I never seem to tire of wearing it even though it is years old and considering it is from Primark I'd say that it's holding up admirably.

Usually, I wear it with a blouse but in the Subtle Art of Casual Styling called for Breton stripes. Is it just me or is it impossible to have too many striped tops? This is my favourite one, which was super cheap from H&M but I have a drawer stuffed full of them. Top it off with my trusty beret, a school boy's scarf and a gold brooch... or two and I'm ready to go. I promise that I do actually take that hat off (sometimes) but it's winter and I am always taking pictures outside. As for the brooches, I am quickly developing an addiction to the small gold variety.

These shots were taken on route to an antique fair, where I bought four brooches. A golden teacup and strawberries, yet another bow and this cute little needlepoint pin. It matched my scarf so perfectly that I had to have it and what's better is that I still came home with change from a £5 note. I love those kind of thrfting trips!

As you might have noticed, I'm in the midst of making some changes to the layout of the blog. Sunday Best: Bobbie Waterbury's Coat

Welcome to 2011! I'm feeling a little fragile today but I'm glad to get back to blogging on a Sunday evening. This was what I wore on Hogmanay. I pretty much despise new year's parties, I've never been to a good one so for the past few years I've cooked roast beef and all the trimmings for my friends on New Year's day, instead of going out the night before. Unfortunately I had a few too many glasses of red and champagne cocktails and now I'm suffering for it. Thankfully I had already taken these because I'm in no fit sate to be photographed today!

Lately I've been inspired by late Victorian and Edwardian children's clothing with a 60's and 70's influence. Think Jane Banks in Mary Poppins or Bobbie Waterbury in The Railway Children. So needless to say, the moment I saw this coat in Topshop, I had to have it. It is so similar to the coat Jenny Agutter wears in the end scenes of The Railway Children, the very same coat that I have been dreaming of since I was a little girl. Now I just need a lovely green beret with a bobble and a messy Gibson girl-esque bouffant.

The dress and loafers were sneaky sale purchases, right before Christmas when I should have been buying presents but bargains like this were just too good to leave behind. The loafers are Topshop and the dress is TBA. I like the loafers because they add a much needed hint of masculinity into my wardrobe and I don't think the dress needs any introduction. I swear could wear their clothes everyday, they are just so perfect!

Resolutions:

Buy quality over quantity.
Walk and cycle as much as I can and make healthy choices.
Blog more.
Learn to crochet.

I feel that this part of the post is obligatory and somehow writing it on here sets it in stone. Mostly mine are to continue with the ones I made last year. I think I succeeded, I've done quite well buying quality clothes and last year I dropped almost two dress sizes. I would also like to learn to crochet so I can make collars and cuffs but the most important one is to blog more regularly, not just Sunday outfit posts.

What I Wore in 2010

All of my time was taken up trawling through second hand shops and tatty old warehouses in search of beautiful, tatty old furniture.

August
We finally settled into our new flat and I embraced summer with denim (not an easy task for me), pale colours and clogs.

September
I used Sherlock Holmes as my main sartorial influence.

October
After weeks of waiting, my Poppy Pashley arrived just in time to be put away for the winter but not before a few rides in the park. Then we flew to Nevada and California, where the weather was miserable in San Francisco. I felt sick for home and chose to dress overtly British. Or like Alexa Chung, at very least.

November
I wore alot of plaid (I'm Scottish, after all) all sewn with my own fair hands. Then it snowed, alot!

December
Then it snowed constantly and taking pictures was difficult but I attempted the subtle art of casual dressing with black and white Tshirts. Since dressing down is not my forté (I wish it was), I'm back to wearing clothes fit for Edwardian Children. The final shot is from today's shoot, which I'll hopefully post tomorrow.

After looking through all my posts from the last year, I decided only to choose pictures from the last six months. This is because, since I graduated this summer I've finally been able to give my blog the amount of attention that I've always wanted to and all of you darling readers deserve. It just wasn't possible while I had such a heavy work load... those period frocks certainly didn't make themselves. Since then blog has finally begun to look the way I have always wanted it to and I'm enjoying it more than ever. I hope that you are too!

At the risk of becoming overtly sentimental, I would just like to say a infinite Thank You to all my readers both old and new. All your sweet comments and emails don't go unnoticed and once the festive period comes to an end I will be back with regular outfit posts, long awaited tutorials and a giveaway. The reason the tutorials have been slow is that I'm unsure of how much detail to go into. I would hate to sound patronising but at the same time, I don't want to miss out important information. So I need you to tell me if you would prefer very detailed instructions and pictures or a slightly simpler tutorial?

Last week I had the sudden urge to print a tshirt, something I haven't done since I was twelve or thirteen. It's really simple but very satisfying, I won't bore you with a tutorial because all you need is an image, a tshirt and a tube of Dylon Image Maker which comes with all the instructions.

I choose a picture of Françoise Hardy, that I have pinned up next to my dressing table for inspiration.
There aren't many faces that I would be happy to wear across my chest but Françoise is definitely one of them.

My favourite part is peeling the paper off, slowly revealing the image underneath. Well, that and wearing it!

Who would you put on a Tshirt? I think I'll try Anna Karina or Jean Shrimpton next.

A Very Mulberry Christmas

Merry Christmas! I hope you are all enjoying the Yuldetide Gay, I trust that you were all good girls and boys (Do I have any male readers? I hope so) this year and Santa was generous.

So far I've had a very relaxing Christmas with lots of delicious food and many, many alcoholic beverages. I've been watching twee films like Little Women and The Railway Children and making inspiration notes for sewing projects. Roberta's coat at the end of The Railway Children and Amy March's bows were my favourite.

Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without presents and this year I was a quite lucky girl. My favourite gifts seem to have followed a Really Raaaatheer British theme, a little red pillar box that houses a pencil sharpener, a brooch shaped like a bicycle and a copy of Canteen's beautifully designed book.

My favourite gift of all was from my sweet beloved fiancé, who surprised me with a Mulberry Alexa. I was so excited when I saw it that I ran to hug him but since I'm so clumsy, I slipped (socks and a polished wooden floor didn't help), knocked him down too and we both ended up in a heap on the floor laughing and covered in bruises. Sore but very, very happy!

Waking up in Vegas

While I'm unable to post the about the things I would like to, I thought I would share some pictures of my trip to Nevada earlier in the year. Its hard to imagine such beautiful weather while I'm here in Edinburgh battling sub zero temperatures and a thick blanket of snow.

We drank alot, sunbathed, I gambled $1, shopped way too much and eat the best burger of my life, at In 'n' Out but the main reason we were there was for our friends wedding.

For the Stag and Hen parties... Ok, Bachelor and Bachelorette parties we dressed up as Sailorettes and the boys wore custom tshirts. The Groom's name is Stu.
Everywhere we went people asked to have their pictures taken with us, all for a few sailor hats and red lipstick...

Dinner in In 'n' Out while the sun was setting, after a long day driving around thrift stores was the perfect end to my day.

Then came the main event, the marriage of Miss Shelly Ritchie and Mr Stuart Ford.
Shelly had her hair and makeup done by make up artist who specialises in Pin Up styling, she absolutely looked amazing! We all cried throughout the ceremony and then we drove to the Vegas sign with Mr & Mrs Ford for pictures.

Just as we were leaving for the Chapel it was decided that we should wear our sailor hats with our bridesmaids dresses, which I think worked out perfectly.

The boys all looked dashing, especially my beloved in his tux. He has a good stylist, you see.

My favourite thing of all was the wedding favour, a tea towel!

Sunday Best: Cold Hands, Warm Heart

This weekend I threw a Christmas party for my dearest friends. I spent all of Saturday baking cupcakes, mince pies and other seasonal treats. Including my Candy Cane Cupcakes that were recently featured on Cellardoor's Blog.

We celebrated the Yuletide Gay, listened to old Christmas songs and drank a gin... or two. In fact, it maybe have been a few more than that because on Sunday I was in no fit state for blogging. This made me grumpy as can be because I'm a creature of habit, I like my Sundays to follow a well carved design. Sundays are for elaborate breakfasts, blogging and a roast dinner. Since this Sabbath day contained none of these rituals so today I met my beloved for coffee and an excuse to take a few pictures. Then he headed back to work and I went for a peruse through my favourite charity shops.

After such a busy weekend I wasn't in the mood for a fancy outfit so I wore my go to Tshirt from Urban Outfitters with a navy corduroy skirt that I just finished. My boyfriends vintage leather belt, my coat and scarf from this post with a couple of gold necklaces, my favourite satchel and clogs.
The low winter sun was blinding but it was still absolutely freezing, by the time we bought coffee we had both lost the feeling in our fingers are toes but atleast my nail varnish looked nice.

A Love Letter...

I wish this was an outfit post but the snow in Scotland has reached epic proportions. Roads are closed, there has been no post and the bus service is sporadic. While the snow looks very pretty it makes simple tasks, like posing for pictures in the park, rather difficult. Hopefully I'll be back this weekend with some pictures from my annual Yuletide Soiree and our newly purchased wooden sledge.

If I could steal any girls wardrobe it would Marias. Her thrifting skills are truly enviable and her styling is always creative. I especially love her Heritage/Mitford Sister style outfits and her gorgeous racing green bike, Millicent.

Laia's styling is darling and her outfits are always perfectly matched. I love her used of colour and she rocks a beret better than anyone else.

I always look forward to Starr's posts, she is a thrifting genius, her photography and styling are perfection but what I love most about her blog is her colour palettes. I'm always inspired to be more creative with colours after I've read her posts.

Last but certainly not least is my all time favourite, Wish wish wish. We share a love for peter pan collars, bows and patent shoes but that isn't just why I love reading her blog. Carrie's photographs are beautiful and her posts are a constant source of inspiration, this girl has The Eye!

Sunday Best: Narnia

I really didn't think that I would be posting today, I was up against the elements, a hastily packed and ill thought out suitcase and a power cut.

This weekend we went to Tyne and Wear and given the weather we weren't going to take any pictures but when we drove into Alnwick and stopped at The Tree House it was just too pretty not to. We arrived just as it started to snow and everywhere looked just like Narnia. Huge icicles were hanging from the tree house's eaves, the tree branches were bowing under the weight of all the snow and the snow was so deep in places that it nearly flooded my boots. It was a world away from the last time we visited.

With Narnia in mind, I started to seriously crave Turkish Delight but had to make do with my rose lip salve.

You must forgive me the major faux pas of posting about the same dress twice but I really can't stop wearing it. I've taken to wearing it with this sweater . I love the key detail and how the colours perfectly match the plaid. I wore them with my TBA coat and leather riding boots. I'm not really fond of wearing boots but in conditions such as this, I wasn't left with much choice. It is always a challenge to say warm and look nice, especially when you refuse to wear trousers. I'm still searching for the perfect thick winter tights... any suggestions?

The snow was so hard packed and icy in places that walking was pretty precarious. Thankfully I didn't actually fall but Ad managed to shoot this one as I was slipping and sliding all over the place.

I also want to say thank you for your lovely comments and feedback last week about my dress. The response was so positive that I've decided to go ahead and start selling some pieces. Hopefully I'll have more to show you very soon.

Factory Girl

I instantly fell in love with this collection from Awear. It was impossible not to, the lure of the messy Bardot style hair and the leopard print coat were just too much. I only meant to share a few pictures with you but there was no way I could choose, I hope you love them as much as I do.

The collection is full of my favourite things - bows, peter pan collars and patent leather. I instantly added this navy shift with twin bows -swoon- to the top of my Christmas list. All I need now is to perfect that hairdo, where did I put that backcombing brush...

A Rather Blustery Day

First of all I must welcome all of my new followers and say a huge thank you to Carrie for sending you over here. Her blog always such an inspiration to me so it was such a pleasure to be included alongside such stylish ladies. If you haven't read the her post, have a look and be sure to check out all the other girls blogs, they are amazing!

Thank you for all your lovely comments and sweet emails, it is always so encouraging to hear that you enjoy my posts because I love putting them together. I'm still trying to visit all your blogs and leave comments so bare with me.

Today was really rather blustery and bitterly cold so I didn't dare take off my coat. My dress had been hanging up, half made for the last week and I'm so glad that I finally got around to finishing it because I literally haven't taken it off since I finished stitching the hem. The fabric was a dream to work with, the wool is almost like felt and with a little steaming it moulded perfectly into any shape.

I wasn't quite sure about this coat, it's Orla Kiely and a gift from my Mum. She gave it to me at the end of the summer and it's just been hanging in my wardrobe ever since. At this point I think that I should point out that my wardrobe is far from packed with designer items that I have forgotten about and that my Mother is possibly the worlds biggest Orla Kiley fan. She gave me this because the fastening on the collar was broken and she never wore it.

Anyway, I'm not sure what the collar is supposed to look like but I wanted to step away from Constance Billard and towards Carnaby Street so I opted for this coat instead of my beloved TBA. I'm glad I did because after a little fiddling around with the collar, I totally fell in love with it.

The Loafers (they deserve capitals) make my heart skip a beat each and every time I look at them. Aren't they truly perfect? I thought I would never own them but miraculously I found the last pair in my size and Adam was so sweet as to buy me them. When the times comes, bury me in them!

Now I'm off to see Harry Potter and cry my eyes out. I hate it when good things come to an end.

P.S. I need to ask you an important question. If I were to start selling dresses like this one, would you be interested in buying them?

Antique Fair

Unfortunately I don't have an outfit post this weekend. After suffering through a nasty cold all weekend I wasn't really in the mood for photographs. On a whim we decided to drive to an antique fair on the outskirts of the city for a rummage.

I'm so glad that we did, there were hundreds of stalls and so many covetable pieces. On the whole everything seemed to be reasonably priced, which isn't always the case. I added countless items to my ever growing Christmas list and had to exercises extreme control, so as not to bring destitution upon myself.

One stall in particular stood out (over half on my pictures were taken there), all of the stall holders items were so perfectly chosen. I was so torn over buying the tatty green drawers or the basket but in the end the choice was made for me because when I went back the drawers were gone. I also had my eye on the sweet little house painting but I left it behind, I desperately hope that it will still be for sale at Funk Fair next month. Although I highly doubt it.

Such Great Heights.

I've done it. I've taken matchy-matchy to new heights.

That's the problem with making your own clothes, the amount of matching accessories are limitless. Ever since I returned home, I have been hard at work drafting patterns and sewing myself winter clothes but you will be seeing much more of that soon.

Winter has already taken its hold on Edinburgh and it is cold. Weather like this is perfect for wearing wool and I am doing just that. Woolly hat, scarf, gloves, skirt, coat and even a tie! My skirt is the same one from this post and the scarf and tie were made from the remnant fabric.

Originally I intended to make a bow tie but the wool was too thick and instead this slim tie came about. I think it gives a much needed masculine touch to the outfit. The blouse is an old favourite from Fearne Cotton at Very and my shoes and coat were both purchased in the U.S.

I am (and have been for what seems like forever) in search of the perfect Peter Pan Collar Blouse but I can't seem to find the one. I must have looked through thousands of vintage shirts in San Francisco but to no avail. Any recommendations would be gratefully received!

P.S I am working on a skirt tutorial, which I should be posting soon.

Haight-Ashbury

Almost as soon as I published my last post, grumbling and complaining about the weather in San Francisco and my inability to shoot, the rain stopped. We instantly took the opportunity to escape the hotel for a final rummage in the vintage stores and take a few pictures.

Thanks to the chilly weather I managed to get a lot of unexpected wear out of my Alexa Chung for Madewell Tennessee dress. I bought the coat from a vintage store out of pure nessessity but I choose it because it reminded me of an English school boys blazer. The scarf from Old Navy just added to the little boy scholar look and Adam took to calling me Harry Potter.

I think a little bit of homesickness made me emphasise the British-ness in my style, mostly borrowed (stolen) from Alexa Chung. Though I liked San Francisco (I left a little piece of my heart with the thousands of darling pet dogs there and another in Wholefoods) I didn't feel like belonged. I felt forever overdressed, even wearing this coat, a pair of JC brogues and corduroy shots. I still felt like I had gone overboard. Never fear, you won't find me dressing down for anyone, not even San Francisco.

These shots where taken in Haight Ashbury, which is packed with huge vintage stores and cute boutiques, as well as a bar called Magnolia that brews their own truly blissful rose beer. Even though I don't usually drink beer, I couldn't drink enough of this one. If you are in this area, you must try it.

Please excuse any inconsistencies in this post. I edited the pictures 32,000 feet or so above North America, wrote the post somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean. Now, here I am finally posting it (while a little jet lagged) from my living room in chilly Edinburgh, my the cat purring next to me and a cup of tea.

It is good to be home!
